My local Mazda dealer is quoting £750 for a 75000 mile service. An independent is quoting £251. And the latter claims to have access to the DSR. Who do I trust? Read more

First off, go back to the dealer, tell them that their price is too high, and unless they can be more reasonable then you will be going independent. That might just encourage them to come down a fair bit. However, you do need to know EXACTLY what the dealer is quoting to do, compared to the independent. The dealer price might include a brake fluid change, coolant change, fuel filter change, etc, etc.

If they aren't willing to move on price, and if the work being done is similar, then I'd personally go independent. It's not as if the car is still under warranty....

I have just acquired a 2002 peugeot 406 2.0 hdi 90 bhp siemens model. I put a brand new battery on and refurbished alternator as they were both suspect anyway when I bought it. However it drains the battery when stood. It did before replacing parts and after so not the new parts.

I have had a meter inline wth the battery when everything locked and off etc, it shows a constant drain of 0.16 amp. Obviously I want this down to 0.01 amp. Having worked my way through every fuse in the car I get it as fuse 9 on the fascia fuseboard (28 fuses fascia 1) and its a 5 amp fuse. I pull this and it drops to 0.01 amp.... Read more

Pleased you found the problem but if a drain of 160ma flattens your battery overnight its time for a new one. Because of the large plate area they will still provide enough power to start the car, providing it starts first time, when their capacity has fallen to a fraction of the original but has very little reserve power.

Its the time of the year when the service is required and i was wondering if its worth replacing the injector seal as this has been the cause to many peoples turbo faults. What sort of cost could i be looking at to replace them? Read more

Hi All,

We travelled a bit last year through Western US in an RV, which was great fun, and having done some research my friend and I who were rented the vehicle together invested a few quid on an international driving licence.... Read more

Just got back from Louisiana and hired a car from Hertz using my old fashioned paper driving license(no photo). They didn't ask to see my passport either.Petrol is $2.20 a gallon. They gave me a Chevvy Impala 3.5 V6 brand new with only 2000 miles on the clock.Very impressed with it.Smooth, quiet and well built. Not so much with the mpg which was around 17 round town and 27 on the motorway. But at those prices who cares?

Noticed the other day that when i depress the clutch, there is, what only can be described as a whirring/whining noise.

As soon as the clutch is released the noise stops - gear changes are still smooth and driving isn't affected.

Any ideas?? Read more

It does sound like the release bearing. So basically, as driving is not affected, you keep going until gear changing worsens or you can't stand the noise. Then you fit a whole new clutch, as the saving by just renewing the bearing is small.

I recently signed a 4 year lease on a new Touareg. Car was delivered with no space saver spare and just a pump instead. Now I know cars are often supplied with no space saver now as its cheaper not to but the standard specification on both last and this year's models (mine was made in Nov 14 apparently) and the standard spec. on VW's website explicitely states the car is suplied with a space saver.

Now I know they'll say (they have gone totally silent on this despite 4 calls) that specs change without notice but my question is that if the spec on a 2014 model states it comes with a space saver and they stopped supplying space savers last year - why does the 2015 brochure (from April 2015) also state that all models come with a space saver?... I don't think theirs much you can do legally as it's just an accessory, not a material change and as you say, they have all sorts of disclaimers about Specification subject to change and liability for errors and ommissions exempt.

I have just bought the Suzuki and the front speaker does not work, so i have looked at buying a replacement only to see most speakers being sold with an adaptor kit.

My question is firstly does the kit fit inside the door card, as the speaker cover is moulded into the card and does not come off, or do you have to cut the door card to fit. ... Read more

I have not taken the door card off yet so no i`m not sure its the speaker, just trying to get an idea what my options are if it is.

Thanks

Hi. I have just replaced a broken front spring. The strut is still off the car. The top bearing is lined up as recommended. I can manually turn the bearing about 40 degrees each way at which point it becomes tight. Should it easily spin right round? How should it feel? The spring is obvoiously exerting great pressure on the seat below the bearing and I doubt that the seat is perfectly at right angles to the damper shaft. Any advice would be welcome. Would it matter if the top nut was over torque? So far as I can see all this nut does is fasten the top fittings tight,y down to the shoulder on the shaft. I just don't know how it should feel so any help would be appreciated before I commit the strut to the car. I did put some grease on the ball bearings. Read more
