Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 2009 - Clutch making a funny noise - stewil007
Noticed the other day that when i depress the clutch, there is, what only can be described as a whirring/whining noise.

As soon as the clutch is released the noise stops - gear changes are still smooth and driving isn't affected.

Any ideas??

Probably the release bearing. Its a cheap part but fitting costs exactly the same as fitting a complete clutch unit.

Questions are, what mileage has the vehicle covered and has the clutch ever been replaced.

Car has done 60k and clutch is the original.

Is replacing the bearing or getting a new clutch an expensive job, not so much the parts but the labour - as i would need a garage to do it?

Last time I was quoted by a garage for a clutch was 1996 on a Golf and it was £360. A mechanic mate fitted a quality LUK or Valeo 3 part kit (cannot remember which) for 1/2 that.

It does sound like the release bearing. So basically, as driving is not affected, you keep going until gear changing worsens or you can't stand the noise. Then you fit a whole new clutch, as the saving by just renewing the bearing is small.
