did the Skoda Superb ever get the 1.4 tsi belt engine or did it stick with the 1.4 tsi chain engine (the one with the issues)?... Read more

I bought my car 2 months 10 days ago, it has a 3 month warranty which includes the Turbo which has just failed. I now notice the warranty is limited to £500.

Is the dealer liable for the full cost of repair which will be citca £1000 or should I grin and bear it and be grateful I'll get a contribution? Read more

This has been happening for a few months now. When I start the engine there's this whining noise which also happens (louder when I accelerate) when I'm driving. I've put up with it as the car seems to be driving ok. That was until friday when an RAC patrolman was called out for another problem but noticed the whining noise. He looked under the bonnect and checked the pulleys and p/steering fluid and they were fine. He got me to turn the wheel with the engine on and it didn't seem to get any worse while I was doing that. Anyway I took it to my garage who said it was the power steering but I'm confused that it happens when I'm not turning the wheel? I'm not the most mechanical but this doesn't make sense. The garahge are saying there's no urgent rush to get it done as I've had the noise for a few months now but to take it in if it get's any worse. Any ideas if this is right? I'm going to ring them (the garage) later to confirm exactly what the problem is as I have a warranty which says the power steering is covered. I'm just very confused! Read more

Currently have a 1.2 Hyundai i10 doing about 1000 miles per month (75% Motorway, 20% NSL A road, 5% 30MPH) getting on average 50MPG (57.6MPG from manufacturer) according to my fuel logbook.... Read more

I think you made a good choice. A friend has swapped out of a very nice TDCi Mondeo for a 1.0 Ecoboost Focus and is very happy. I have similarly swapped out of a TDCi S-Max for a 0.9 TCe Renault Captur and consider the performance and economy of the little triple to be more than adequate.

Air con recently failed. Advised needs new compressor - labour/part cost £1150 - minus trade in of old compressor. End cost about £800 but VW MAY and only may, make a contribution.

It's a very common failure. Somewhere on Car by Car reviews under either VW or Skoda there's mention of this and a cheaper alternative, costing only 2 or 3 hundred if I recall. You don't need Vw to fix this kind of thing, a good independent air con specialist will be much more cost effective.

A common failure on the Mk 5 golf and equivalent Octavia but I didn't realise that it extended to the Mk 6 although I wouldn't be surprised. I think the cheaper alternative was either a Bosch or Sanden compressor.

My car radio says LOCkED 13. I put in the code too many times. I have disconnected battery but still.... Locked. How can I unlock my radio code? Read more

All you can try is turning the radio on while Button #6 is pressed. This may give you just one chance to enter the correct Keycode. So make sure you have the correct code.

It might not work, perhaps it's only applicable for LOCKED10....

We are in need of a new car, I've always fancied a Golf and have been looking at the Mk 6 1.4 TSI 122 Match 5 door. However someone mentioned the Leon. I don't like the previous Leon but the new Leon I do like the look of. I might be able to get a 1.4 13 plate Leon for similar money to a 11 or 12 plate golf.
We will probably go for a PCP finance deal (never bought a car on finance before but currently don't have a lump sum in the bank and PCP looks favourable to a personal loan.
Question is which car?????? Read more

What I don't understand is that (see HJ's Car-by-Car reviews for both) the 'What to watch out for' for the Golf mk7 has sooo many more entries than the very similar Leon (same platform). Admitedly there's more Golfs around, but it looks like its had a whole raft of problems.

Shame really, as I quite like the 3-door Golf (better looking IMO than the 5 door) as well as its cousin from Seat (both the 3 and 5 door versions are good looking, though, like the Golf, I prefer the 3 door SC model), and the Golf's interior is better. I'd also be looking at the 1.4 TSi, maybe even the ACT version for that extra bit of vrrm without (hopefully!) the mpg penalty....

The only time I've spent driving an ASX was out in Australia a couple of years ago - my sister has a diesel (2.0 I think, with AWD) with manual gearbox, and high spec. We were off for a few days of diving, so she lent us that and used her husband's car, as he was away with work.

Must admit, it was very good. Both of us found it easy to get a comfortable driving position (I'm 5'11", my wife is 5'2"), seats were great, visibility good, plenty of 'go' in the engine, everything felt well screwed together, touchscreen nav/entertainment was perfectly reasonable, boot a good size, and it averaged 40-ish mpg in the 300 miles we drove it....
