Is it important to use fully synthetic oil for oil top ups and what oil is recommended? Read more

skidpan

Thanks for info, but why does synthetic oil need to be used?

Because that is what Ford specify and they know a thing or 2 about what their engines needs, they design and build them don't they. To use any product that does not meet Fords spec is just plain stupid. The difference in cost for a top up is minimal.

I often read threads which criticise driving examples. Often these develop on how standards might be improved. One thing I learned from becoming a member of the IAM is the need to keep looking at driving skills.

I would be very interested to hear the views of professional drivers ( obviously others as well ) on how they stay safe on the roads. One aspect is of particular interest to me and that is how they maintain concentration for long hours. What effect does the intake of food and hydration have on this ?... Read more

Common sense seems to have gone out the window on the roads these days. Simply things like queuing in turn cause idiotic reactions.

When a lane is closed on the motorway you're supposed to use both lanes up to the restriction and then merge in turn. But a vast majority get in the inside lane way too early and do their damn best to stop anyone getting 'in front' of them! Hence a long single file queue....

We have had our Rover Mini Mpi restored to cure its severe rust problem. The company involved owned by an individual who advertises himself and has built a long standing business on mini restorations has badly let us down with poor workmanship, items physically removed from the car rather than refitting them even though they worked prior to removal and items poorly fitted and or not working.

Now I know any car that has gone through a restoration will have teathing problems, and I accept this and understand, but unable to select 1st or reverse without the gears grinding ( a new clutch was paid for as the other had oil contamination but selected gears perfectly) Headlight adjuster motors not refitted and the moulding in the headlamp bowls sawn off and covered with white insulation tape (these worked 100% before restoration) a brand new carpet bought from Newton Commercials for the car year and model, being hacked about and fitted with gaps and nothing lining up correctly. The brand new head lining and rear trims again poorly fitted and creased. Overspray on the lower black vinal dash panel taken off with sand paper and ruining the dash, over spray form a black car that was in the same workshop all down the right hand side of our bright red mini. And many more problems from loose mirrors to badly conected foglights, to door lock barrels being loose and falling out to bad fitting doors and bonnet rubing paint off of the rest of the body work. The list is long and that isn't being picky and using a magnifying glass.... Read more

my car runs fine but temp guage hardly moving, then it could be after 40 50 miles temp guage showing normal then goes back to cool,it does this every so often, when I put heater on or check engine by hand it's only I would say hand warm.As I've said it's running fine, but noticed tick over a bit fast when showing cold on guage then down to about 700 revs when guage decides to work. ANY IDEAS,or will I go ahead and put new stat in. Read more

Living with it cost you hundreds of pounds in poor fuel consumption due to not running at the correct temp. Regards Peter

To say nothing about having to drive around in a freezing cold car! I remember when the thermostat stuck on my Mondeo Mark 2. Temperature needle on the gauge barely moved and, unless you were on a really long run, the car was absolutely freezing with next to nothing coming out of the heater at all. I couldn't wait to put a new thermostat in; fortunately, unlike on the Mark 3, this was a fairly easy job.

The ECO stop start function on my two years old SL350 AMG Sports has a mind of its own. Some days it becomes operative after a journey of a mile but on others I can drive five or six miles and I have driven ten or more miles without it activating. Even when it has activated it's just as likely to de-activate without warning. For instance it will often just start the engine when stopped at traffic lights. I know several parameters have to be met before it will work but I haven't identified any set of circumstances which might affect it although it seems to activate more promptly after it's been parked up for a short time after being driven for only a few miles. The dealership agree there's a problem and eventually fitted a new battery under warranty which seemed to improve the situation marginally but now it's as bad as ever it was. Read more

The system will only work when certain conditions are met, and will not work if the temperature difference between inside the car and outside is is out of limits, or if the DPF is regenerating. The car must be out of gear with the clutch pedal released. On my Octavia a symbol appears on the instrument panel to tell me when the system is disabled, or I can choose to turn it off. Check your handbook. It should tell you in there under which conditions the system will work and when it won't.

I spent the afternoon spraying bilt hamber dynax UB with a Sealey SG18 spray gun.

It was mainly a practice run for me to see how well the gun works with the Dynax UB wax. I think it could be better if I had either stood the wax in a bucket of hot water for some time before or maybe thinned it down a little but, overall the gun sprayed it fairly well and it didn't drip despite me putting it on a bit thick in places. ... The UB wax has another use, it has incriminated the MOT man. When I took a look underneath after taking it for the MOT, there are 2 impressions of the jack pads they use for raising the car for testing wheel bearing etc.

The irritating thing is, these marks are on a part of the car floor which is not a jacking point and is not strong enough to be jacked on either. Last year I questioned why it was bent and was told they didn't do it. Obviously they did this year.. can I be bothered to go back and argue though?
