Mercedes SL 350 AMG Sports - ECO stop start problem - mercedessl

The ECO stop start function on my two years old SL350 AMG Sports has a mind of its own. Some days it becomes operative after a journey of a mile but on others I can drive five or six miles and I have driven ten or more miles without it activating. Even when it has activated it's just as likely to de-activate without warning. For instance it will often just start the engine when stopped at traffic lights. I know several parameters have to be met before it will work but I haven't identified any set of circumstances which might affect it although it seems to activate more promptly after it's been parked up for a short time after being driven for only a few miles. The dealership agree there's a problem and eventually fitted a new battery under warranty which seemed to improve the situation marginally but now it's as bad as ever it was.

I would just turn it off. It save virtually no fuel.

I have done this on my last 4 cars, (Volvo, Audi, BMW, BMW). Just start the engine and turn it off, (button on dash).

Q.

P.S. I also never use the electric handbrake unless I am forced to. Park on levelish ground and leave in 1st gear. Another solution to something that was never a problem!

Turn the climate control air conditioning system off and see if it behaves any differently.

The system will only work when certain conditions are met, and will not work if the temperature difference between inside the car and outside is is out of limits, or if the DPF is regenerating. The car must be out of gear with the clutch pedal released. On my Octavia a symbol appears on the instrument panel to tell me when the system is disabled, or I can choose to turn it off. Check your handbook. It should tell you in there under which conditions the system will work and when it won't.
