Recently we received a Recall letter for our Toyota Yaris. The problem description as follows:

Description: Oil may accumulate in the turbo charger and, in certain circumstances, flow into the combustion chamber. This may cause engine damage. In extreme cases oil can be ejected from the engine and if it comes in contact with an ignition source may result in a fire. Remedial action: Depending on vehicle diagnosis, modify intercooler layout to improve air flow; upgrade ECU software; upgrade turbo charger and/or vacuum pump.... Read more

Glad it's turmed out well for you, sks. I think Toyota are conscious that they have a high proportion of private buyers in the UK, and they're prepared to do the right thing to preserve their reputation.

The Yaris is a good car, underestimated, like most Toyotas apart from the GT86, by the magazine road testers (although not by the HJ road tests). Personally, if I wanted a Yaris I'd go for the 1.3 petrol every time. Toyota have done the decent thing but better not to have had the problem in the first place....

I'm in a dilemma on what to do next....
My 06 CVT Mini had what started as an intermittent problem with being driven between 20-30 mph in auto mode. It reved high to 4 on the gauge and jumped like a learner driver putting it in the wrong gear. 0-20mph no problem and 30mph and up no problem, it's main issue seems to be when its down shifting in this mph zone.
Mini garages were booked up befor Xmas so I took it to a German car specialist he put it on his autologic diagnostics and came back with:
DME 3 faults: 1787 gearbox ratio acurator open circuit, 1698 gearbox control unit - control error, 1656 EWS incorrect code
Electrical transmission management - no communications

This technician advised I had the EGS replaced

Decided to wait and get opinion from Mini Dealer, they said it's very rare and highly unlikely for this module to fail and advised I have their recomended CVT specialist give me his opinion, which was similar so advised I first have an authorised mini garage wipe and re code the unit as a non mini diagnostic unit may not be compatable.
Mini Stratford tried this.... However their diagnostics said: 1 fault found code 1611 communication conection, gearbox control unit.
So they advised the electrician checks the wires first before the unit just because even though it's the obvious answer to replace unit they still state it's highly unlikely for that unit to fail.
Electrician alongside the CVT specialist checked yesterday all wiring and found nothing so I am back to the first diagnostics recomendation replace the unit or now a choice of another more costly possibility being the clutch pressure control solenoid. However he said he and the electrician are 90% certain it's the transmission control module that needs replacing because he did various tests including reversing at speed finding that it did the same jumping, and it's a bit better behaved when in manual mode.
I went back to mini today to book in for module replacement but ended up leaving with car again because mini didn't give me a great deal of confidence it was the right diagnosis with their apprehension about a module change as obvious as it is answer wise to everything it may not be right because of the rareity of it failing at 54,000.

I welcome any advise with regards to this as I have got to the point of wanting to declare the vehicle off the road and taking a time out with it all as much as I love my mini Read more

No help i'm afraid, i just searched for a couple of minutes with suitable key words and many hits were returned, not many of them it must be said make good reading, it appears you are far from alone, suggest you spend several hours online to find out what other owners have been doing.

Take no notice at all of the waffle from Pinocchio behind the service counter about how unusual this is, he'll be telling you they've never had a timing chain issue next.

I had the cam belt change last month and occasionally I go to start car and it would not start. The next try it would start. When trying to start it tries to turn engine but does one try as if there was a flat battery.
Sunday it would not start, got green flag out and he said flat battery. I was not 100% convinced but put a new battery on.
Tuesday stared first time drove for a mile and stopped the. Would not start again. Bump started and drove to local garage. Left it with them and it started every time. The only thing they could suggest was starter motor. So got that changed.
Picked up today all fine. Just been out started ok. When got in car to come back would not start. After a few goes it did start.

Any ideas please. Read more

Could they have possibly disturbed or damaged the connection to the crank / cam sensor?

The roof lining on my E class estate has started to come down. The car was new in September 2010. The car was covered by the Mercedes used car warranty when the problem began and Mercedes have offered to meet 49% of the cost of supply and fit a replacement roof lining. The retail price of this work is £1550.

Mercedes regard the roof lining as trim which is excluded from the used car warranty, so the 49% is a goodwill gesture.... Read more

Last time I saw a sagging headlining was on a 1970s BL Marina.I would not expect to see it on a 4 year old Merc. I would think that the attachment process was faulty from new and MB should make a much better offer. There may be local trimmers that could carry out a repair, but looks like even this may be expensive.

Simple question, I thought. Which week number will dealers be opening order books for the refreshed CR-V, and which week number will deliveries start. I asked at my local dealer. "Don't know. Sometime late spring or early summer." So I contacted Honda UK. "Sorry we cannot tell you. We do not have this information. You must contact your local Honda franchise." Going round in circles here ! This is unbelievable. The CR-V is made in Swindon. The refresh was announced at the Paris Motor Show. The high-level details are already on the Honda UK website. They MUST have this information, because I know how project management and supply chain logistics work. I cannot see why this information is "secret". Everyone knows the refreshed car is coming, and if they think withholding the information will make me order a run-out "2014 model" they are seriously mistaken. Anyone care to comment or share any information ? Read more

I would buy from a broker. Why should I waste my time negotiating for weeks with a dealer to get a price that is still higher than a broker can quote me in seconds....

The Fiesta and the Auris have averaged around maybe as little as 5,000 and 2,500 miles a year which might suggest nothing but lots of short trips, oil never really warming up, lots of clutch depressions, lots of braking, suspension knocking speed bumps. How may times have they been serviced? I'd look to pay less for higher mileage examples. Auris for me for quality, reliability or Fiesta if I enjoyed my driving.
