I've a Mikuni petrol pump that's defunct. It's off a Yamaha engined golf buggy. It's powered by the pressure difference in the crankcase that pulses a diaphragm in the pump. That pulses a diaphragm that pumps the fuel via a couple of non-return valves.

I've spent the best part of today figuring out how the damn thing works and deciding that one of the non-return valve's stuffed.... Read more

That's exactly what happens when the throttle arrangement isn't set up correctly. It's not so easy to explain, but it becomes obvious when you do it.

The switch is on the throttle pedal and must not switch off until the throttle butterfly valve is at the idle position, which also must be correctly set to allow the engine to idle at the correct speed. Temporarily bridge the switch contacts so that the engine doesn't switch off. Then adjust the throttle stop so that a nice even idle speed is achieved. Adjust the cable so that the throttle moves through its full travel, but leave a bit of slack at the top of the pedal so that the ignition can be switched on without any throttle opening. When it's set correctly the engine will return to idling with your foot only slightly touching the pedal, and the last part of the pedal being released will shut the engine off. If it's all set correctly your backfire will not happen, and the buggy will be a lot smoother to drive.

When I bought this vehicle back last summer it would offen run rough on idle as if it was 'misfiring' or was a petrol engine with a plug lead removed. I have lived with the problem but its got a lot worse recently and in 'kangarooing' even when driving normally which it has never done before. When idling the engine will act as if I am blipping the throttle, run rough and smoke then after a minute or so clear itself before then happening again 10-20 seconds later.

Does this sound like injector faults? A local diesel specialist say he can test them on a bench for a couple of quid each and they just unscrew. Firstly does my amateur diagnosis sound correct and secondly is removing the injectors as easy as this chap suggested?... Read more

I wonder who the mooron was that released the photos to show the boot space. www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/skoda/fabia/first-dri...w

First photo has the boot floor higher than the second one. Hence the pronounced step. Read more

A Skoda Octavia selling point has always been the cavernous boot. I think the MK1 was larger than any competitor. It was huge and still had space for a full size spare.

Nutkey

When the oil temperature is low (below about 70 degrees), there is a noticeable fan-like noise coming from the right hand side of the car. It is unaffected by the cabin airblower speed, and it remains for some time after the engine is switched off. If anything it got louder shortly after I popped the bonnet to take a look.

I have only noticed it since the ambient air temperature got close to freezing. Haven't yet identified where it is coming from, but if I stand in front of the car and pop the bonnet, it is on my left. There is a component just behind the cornering light that has a hose exiting it (this hose then appears to be a drain of some sort, because it drops straight out of the bottom of the car. It *might* be coming from this. The big radiator fans at the front of the car are not spinning. ... Read more

The speedo signal is generated from the left front wheel hub.The sensor is integrated into the wheel bearing and is not replaceable as a seperate part. Also check the wiring to the hub assy.
