The original battery lasted eleven years including the winters of 2010. I got a new Varta battery just under a year ago and not having used the car for a few days it failed to start in near freezing temperature. Additionally the car no longer does a high mileage probably 30 to 40 a week.

I have "old fashioned" battery chargers for a short charge and a couple of hours got it going. I think I need a more modern unit but some of the conditioners seem weak for charging although time is not normally an issue.... Read more

Might be time to check the wiring in that case, If you cigar socket is permanently live and the indicator goes red when the charger is switched off, This could be a high resistance in the wiring to the battery in which case the alternator might also not be charging the battery as it should.

I have a Ctek charger and it is superb. The only thing I didn't like about it was the fuse in the plug was a 13amp and that is well over rated for it.

Had a little incident the other day which frightened the wife but puzzled me. I turned off a main road recently and onto a country side road which had a covering of snow which had been compacted where traffic had been. From this I assumed that the road was not blocked and before setting off selected first gear with no throttle and let out the clutch because of a slight downward gradient. The intention was to let the car "walk" itself down the slope using engine braking. This is something I have done many times over the years. Imagine my horror when the car begin to pick up speed and I was losing not only grip but steering control. What was a surprise is that the engine revs (without touching the throttle) rose to over 3000 rpm as if the wheels had grip but there was no engine braking and total loss of steering. The momentum gained, and in an effort to slow the engine down I applied light braking with still no throttle and the clutch still out. I applied a little more braking and thankfully came to a stop after going into a bank of soft snow. The road have levelled out and we continued our journey after checking that there was no damage. I have never had this before and I don't want to expeience it again. This is the first car I have had with ESP and if it is the cause of my incident I don't like it. The hand book does say to turn it off in loose-surface coditions. O.K. if you remember to do it but possibly lethal if you don't. This can't be right. Regards. Read more

>>engine revs (without touching the throttle) rose to over 3000 rpm

That would suggest to me that there had to be some throttle input....

Go to the garage, and ask them to show you what they mean, what is damaged, etc.

It's entirely possibly for lots of things to break/get damaged if engine mounts fail. Equally possible for nothing else at all to be damaged.

I'm thinking of buying the above which is relatively low mileage at around 70K and has had a recent cam belt change. I read about problems with diesels every week in the Honest John motoring section of the Telegraph on Saturday particularly re emissions, environmental and DPFs.

Should I have any concerns in that regards for this vehicle?... Read more

That engine is very reliable. Cam belt changes are a must (you say it has been done).

my friend took my 2001 corsa to ats euromaster and ended up having new brake shoes and handbrake cable altered. I have no receipt showing what has actually been done or replaced, only the mot and cost me £100 plus £25 for the mot. When I looked at work I had done previously, in the last year I had new front brake pads, in the last 8 months rear shoes and last 4 months rear pads and in the last 1 1/2 years both new handbrake cables. I feel like I've been ripped off. Have I? Read more

I'd suggest you tell them you're going for an independant assessment of the work carried out.

Wouldn't be surprised if they waive all charge when they realise they'd be responsible for the cost of the assessment, if proved they over-charged you....

A bit nerdy to point out but 4wd will give you more traction but not more grip, for that you'll need all season or even winter tyres.(after all, think about it you disbelievers :) what use is 4wd when braking for instance) As someone who lived in Geneva I have proof - british 4x4 drivers with their sporty,up specced low profiled alloys were a joke, wheels spinning at the bottom of the hill to the ski slopes whilst granny in her peugot 205 or renault 5 with winter tyres whizzed past Read more
