I have this same problem on my 2004 1.5 Almera. Have you managed to get any further? I'm going to start with a throttle body clean tonight.

I was interested to read HJs reply to the reader who asked for a replacement car for his Seat that would have enough headroom for his 6ft frame.

HJ suggested the Honda CR-V, when wanting to change up an earlier Honda the CR-V and latest Civic were tried and rejected as in both there was no headroom and even when test driving the latest Mazda 3 I was touching the roof, I am 6ft 1in which is not excessive these days.... Read more

hi all ive got a vauxhall astra 2003 1.4 the speedo didnt work when i bought the car,and still doesnt now.i believe that the speedo sensor is in the front wheel hub(passenger side)....i got into the car yesterday morning and drove about 2 miles and the speedo was working, then it just stopped working..could it be a possibility that the sensor needs a good clean to get it working again or would the full hub need replacing...thanks. I need tyres for my VW Up, and Kumho kh27 tyres are £90 a pair, compared to £120 for Michelin/Continentals. All are low noise, good grip and energy saving. So, are they any good? Is there a catch? Are they likely to be more susceptible to damage for example? On paper they are comparable to the more expensive ones. Read more

The original tyres were Hankooks, both rear were till one burst. Both had done 50k miles. They are good, but not easy to get locally.

Comfort is inevitably subjective, so you need to look at as many options as you have time for. It might be an idea to go to a car supermarket where there will be lots of different models to sit in.

A Golf, A3 or Leon (or Octavia which is slightly bigger) will probably tick most of your boxes - just avoid the twin-charged engines which are anyway quite rare. But don't dismiss the Ford Focus: there are plenty to choose from in all price ranges; you'll get a newer one for your £7,000; and you may well find it comfortable. The 1.8 and 2.0 petrol engines are livelier than the 1.6 with very little loss in economy.

Drove out yesterday and on comes the oil light and battery light. Seems the alternator belt snapped activating the battery light and the AA reckon the flying belt bits have somehow taken out wiring to the oil sensor or the sensor itself. More likely wiring as the sensor is apparently in the crankcase. There seems to be the correct level of oil although when I first checked there wasa dry dipstick...no not me....ten minutes later it shows full. Read more

Vehicle has been taken by the AA to a local garage whom I trust. There was no oil evident in the engine bay so hopefully the belt can be replaced and the sensor wiring fixed.

Hi , just after a bit of advice if any one can help
I have a 2007 diesel focus , high mileage its a taxi , just been through. It's taxi test & passed without any marks against it. However it's just started running loud on acceleleration & if you take you're foot off and cruise its still loud. Stops if you drop gears. Sounds a bit like a cross between over revving-slipping belt -blowing exhaust
Thought it maybe slipping clutch but there's no loss of power or catching up with revs & I figure any exhaust probs would of shown up on test
Could do without being off the road again so any advice would be greatly appreciated
I should add fault is intermittent
Cheers in advance

right so iv looked over the exhaust & it seems ok plus no extra noise if you rev at a standstill, devolopedinto a more constant low rumble type noise thatyou can hear driving in a straight line, gets worse if ypu bear right & stops if you bear left . no noise with full lock on. ive just moved all the wheels from the left to the right side & vice versa but the noise still stops on a left turn and gets worse on a right
