I am not a superstitious person but…Is there such thing as lucky or unlucky car ?

My last company car was reallocated from a previous user and the front bumper had been replaced immediately before coming to me (I saw the record but no details so may have been driver error). In the five months I had it, the front bumper was smashed by a hit and run driver when we were parked in a legitimate space. The rear wing suffered a scuff when parked in a residential street by a driver who did exchange details. On the day I handed it back I noticed a severe crack in the front bumper that had not been there when I washed it a few days previously. Another hit and runner probably in the company car park. So three front bumpers and a scuff in 5 months, mostly in parked situations. I am not superstitious by nature but I wasn't sorry to see it go!

The multi-million pound system of illuminated road signs (imagine the miles and miles of underground cabling) that use psychology, or NLP, to alter your behaviour. The ones near me keep saying "don't be a bore, don't hog the middle lane". Ho ho, very clever. Another is, "Drink and drugs - a lethal cocktail". Someone is actually paid to come up with these sayings.

But lately they have been saying stuff like, "feeling unwell? See your GP or pharmacist". You can see where this is heading. They won't stop at motoring "issues". At some point they might say "The EU is your friend" or "forget borders, the world is your neighbour". As you can tell, they make me even more paranoid. At least we don't yet have loudspeakers playing martial music. We do have hidden listening devices round the place though!

Anyway, does anyone know anything about the theories behind these hugely expensive road signs? Read more

I see that the website techies have found some ways round Ad-blockers so we're now subject to ads sliding across the top and on the sides - pity they couldn't find how to avoid the stupidly long loading times that occur intermittently.

I'll see if I can find a more up to date ad-blocker but if I can't I won't be back....

I have a TomTom SatNav. Have used TomToms Safety/Speed camera database for some years.

But recently I've noticed quite a few local mobile camera locations in my area are no longer shown on the map and some fixed camera's are longer used, and not have been for a few years. And wonders how many more are missing or ghosts.... Read more

I seem to recall HJ suggesting that new cars should have their gearbox oil changed at the first service after one year. I can't find the original post but is that correct? My Golf is one year old and I wonder if there is anything to be gained from having a gearbox oil change? Read more

Thanks. I will look out for a Yaris. They have a tiny boot though (I go camping + dog) Maybe the back seats shift forward. Some of the Japanese cars do that....
