Has anyone changed their old paper driving licence (pre 1998) to the newer id card style?

I tried to renew mine as it was tatty, and I'm hiring a car abroad this year and thought it would be better to have the newer one. However I should have known the dvla wouldn't make this easy!... Read more

Wow, sense of humour failure.

Anyway, the dvla ballsed up my new license as my valid passport isn't valid apparently. So if you've got the original paper one like me, save yourself the grief and keep it!

I have a built in satnav in my 2008 bmw 3 series but it always takes me somewhere about 3 miles from my final destination!

Is it worth getting a tomtom, will I have the same problems? Or is there a way to fix my bmw satnav?... Read more

And so do Garmins

Got a Garmin, had it about 5 years now. It takes full 7 digit post codes and has always taken me direct to the address. If you are out in the sticks where post codes are next to useless it takes lat/long input....

Most small automatics are so sluggish that you need a lot of right foot to make them move - hence poor fuel consumption. Unfortunately if you need an automatic this is something you have to live with.

Best car I had was a 1986 Vauxhall Cavalier SRi. It was carmine red and anthracite with alloy wheels, and had a 1.8 OHC engine with LE Jetronic fuel injection. It went like the clappers and was really nice to drive. It didn't have power steering when I got it so I went to a scrappy and bought the rack, pump, pipes and brackets off of a broken car and fitted them on mine, so now it did have PAS. It also had a slide and tilt sunroof. I kept that for seven years. It's probably rusted away now but I wish I still had it.

In the last 6 months my commute to work has been les of a chore to a complete nightmare. Every single major route in the North East now has problems - mostly caused by idiotic roadworks.

For example the A1 Western Bypass is simply a mess now, due to the appallingly badly planned and implented roadworks which wil be around for years and years. On top of this the vindictive highways agency have just added a further 6 mile stretch of cash camera controlled roadworks that end about 200 yards before the A1 roadworks start!... Read more

Who said I was griping at other drivers? The congestion I'm on about is all caused by poorly planned and managed roadworks. Everyone stuck in the queue is in the same boat as me.

My last company car was reallocated from a previous user and the front bumper had been replaced immediately before coming to me (I saw the record but no details so may have been driver error). In the five months I had it, the front bumper was smashed by a hit and run driver when we were parked in a legitimate space. The rear wing suffered a scuff when parked in a residential street by a driver who did exchange details. On the day I handed it back I noticed a severe crack in the front bumper that had not been there when I washed it a few days previously. Another hit and runner probably in the company car park. So three front bumpers and a scuff in 5 months, mostly in parked situations. I am not superstitious by nature but I wasn't sorry to see it go!

The multi-million pound system of illuminated road signs (imagine the miles and miles of underground cabling) that use psychology, or NLP, to alter your behaviour. The ones near me keep saying "don't be a bore, don't hog the middle lane". Ho ho, very clever. Another is, "Drink and drugs - a lethal cocktail". Someone is actually paid to come up with these sayings.

But lately they have been saying stuff like, "feeling unwell? See your GP or pharmacist". You can see where this is heading. They won't stop at motoring "issues". At some point they might say "The EU is your friend" or "forget borders, the world is your neighbour". As you can tell, they make me even more paranoid. At least we don't yet have loudspeakers playing martial music. We do have hidden listening devices round the place though!

Anyway, does anyone know anything about the theories behind these hugely expensive road signs? Read more
