vauxhall astra - speedo - gvmllr001

hi all ive got a vauxhall astra 2003 1.4 the speedo didnt work when i bought the car,and still doesnt now.i believe that the speedo sensor is in the front wheel hub(passenger side)....i got into the car yesterday morning and drove about 2 miles and the speedo was working,then it just stopped working..could it be a possibility that the sensor needs a good clean to get it working again or would the full hub need replacing...thanks.
