Ive had a Toyota Yaris just over a year, in the summer local toyota dealer service went all smooth, now the cars first MOT is due. The dealer called and asked to be booked, unfortuntely i work long hours and best day is Sunday for me. They do not do Sunday MOT, so i asked if any garage can do MOT for thr car. I was informed that ,for warranty to be valid, the garage had to be TOYOTA approved. So went on TOYOTA site, find a dealer and can only find 16 in london!!! , all Toyota dealers?
Called my local garage F1 autocentre and they said I can get the mot done , as MOT has nothing to do with Toyota garage?... Read more
Can anyone settle an arguement regarding Mobile Speed Van, detection of multi vehicle in a line speeds.
I say the camera in the van is manually operated to set upon a vehicle and the next to check their speeds on approach. Meaning if a line of vehicles spaced apart by approx. 25/35meters, the first can only be detected.... Read more

I had a leak in my Vectra last August which was correctly diagnosed on this forum as a blocked water drainer next to the air con intake which meant water was spilling into the car through the air duct. I removed the black rubber part that was blocked so it wouldn't happen again.
I have just found water again in passenger foot well, not as bad as last time. Any ideas where this can be coming from?... Read more
Interesting selection of cars still built here (as listed on the home page feature). No place for Jazz (runout model), Avensis, CRV, Juke, Note, Leaf.etc. However room for 2 Jags and in at number ten is that good old family car stalwart the Rolls Royce Ghost. £200k family car anyone? I assume tongue was firmly in cheek! Read more
I am well aware of the things you say and dont dispute them. By posing the questions my aim was to counter the claim that todays family cars are `incompetent` in comparison. I feel you may have missed my point.
Appologies for the confusion.
What eventually we all need to know is what real world mpg these vehicles plug in hybrid vehicles are going to produce in urban , cross country. and dual highway/motorway driving.
Other issues which need to emerge before motorists can make a fully informed purchase decision are ;-
1) replacement battery frequency and cost.
2) how overall running costs for different combinations of use (e.g. substantially short trips, substantially long motorway trips or mixed) compared with pure diesel and petrol cars meeting future emission standards... Read more

If not I would go for the JLR Discovery with the new engine Read more
I'm not the first I know but I put too much oil in my car last week, about 1.5 cm above the max mark. I asked a mechanic friend who said no problem so I drove it 100 miles home. However now having read up a little I'm concerned I may have ruined it. It drove home fine. I spent most of the next day trying to symphony some off but what ever I tried failed and I couldn't remove the oil. It started today but I had to turn the key a few times which isn't normal. I didn't notice ant excessive smoke coming from the exhaust but there was a little but I don't know if that's normal, never looked before. I know I need to get it looked at properly but cutting it short I can't afford that right now. If I have killed it (when I checked the dipstick it was oil to the top before I wiped it which makes me think it's the foaming and stuff I've read about) does anyone know how much the worst case scenario is. E bay e nines look to be £300 with delivery and £600 labour ? Would £1000 cover it or am I looking at worse ? Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Read more
Thank you everyone.
Recently, whenever I lock my Golf Mk 4 and leave the car for some time, when I return to the car all 4 electric windows have dropped open by about a third of their travel.
Any ideas what is wrong & likely cost of a fix? Read more
I would get some lube spray into the drivers door lock/catch. If you pull the door handle to the open position you can get some spray in there also. This might help or change the symptoms slightly to know your in the right area!
Mk4 Golfs do have a reasonably complex door lock/catch mech. They can can stripped out and inspected for soldered joint problems. If not its a replacement assembly. Think there upwards of £100.
Might be worth checking the wiring in the door shut area. Inspect the wiring in the black boot between the door hinges. Might be broken from opening/closing door?
On my mk4 golf if you put the key in the door and hold it in the locked/unlocked position it raises/lowers the windows. I think its getting a false signal from somewhere?
Chris.
I'm getting vibration through the steering wheel when over 70 mph, seems to be less if Im accelrating but say i take my foot off the accelarator to coast down from 76 to 70 it seems worse, or if keeping a constant speed. This seems intermittant and can happen between 70 and 90 (havent taken it higher) with 85 being particulary suseptable. I have had the cr at the Garage twice and had the re-balance and tracking done by kwick fit as well.

I would agree with Chris, the only time I have had this problem and it wasn't the tyres it was the inner driveshaft joints, it was on a citroen CX but it had done about 250k miles and much more noticable on a long run when really hot, I suspect it was the grease loosing viscosity.
Hi all,
After a recent driveshaft/wheel bearing change on my R-Reg 1.4XR, I found that the OS brake is now binding. I have checked/replaced several parts and found that the caliper piston is causing the inner brake pad to act on the disc; it's not fully binded, but drags on the disc and causes a loud noise when driving. The piston moves out but appears to fail to retract properly.
So far I have done the following:
- Replaced caliper
- Replaced flexi-hose
- Slackened brake pedal to servo linkage
- Bled system
- Checked pads and caliper are sliding ok
- Checked servo and working ok
- Opened bleed valve to see if master cylinder problem - fluid drips but is not forced out, so I presume master cylinder is ok.
Not really sure what else could be the problem, unless the master cylinder is misadjusted? Has anybody else had this problem before, or has any ideas about what it could be? Personally I'm stumped! Read more
Hi guys,
Many thanks for the advice - unfortunately the car's stuck at my parents' place at the moment and I've returned to work, so opportunities to work on it are limited. I'll have a go at taking some measurements soon and update....

Hi all, thanks you , I am a little more clear even though it seems a way of making sure customers are tied with dealers, however i can understand the logic.
Its just does not help when i need the work to be done, i cannot and I have to fit around their times and yet the costs of the dealers are always higher then other weel establised garages....
