Mobile Speed Van detection - settle arguement - autumnboy

Can anyone settle an arguement regarding Mobile Speed Van, detection of multi vehicle in a line speeds.

I say the camera in the van is manually operated to set upon a vehicle and the next to check their speeds on approach. Meaning if a line of vehicles spaced apart by approx. 25/35meters, the first can only be detected.

A friend reckons, in the same scenario. The camera is fully automated and can detect each vehicle on approach.

Been to "motordefenceteam" site which explains all camera's used by various police forces. But not enough said of the their functions to settle our views.

thanks

I think the latest cameras may be partly automated and have some multi vehicle detection capability but it would surely depend on the angle of approach to the van. A laser system would for instance not be able to use a windscreen as a target.

It seems reasonable to assume that speed detection must be made within certain limits of position on the road so if the cars are closely packed and coming more or less head on then I dont see how its possible to clock any but the 1st vehicle. Registering the other number plates could also be a problem, maybe they have a front mounted camera too to aid them.

I also think the cameras are as much if not more so used as anpr cameras looking for mot/insurance/"national security" issues.

In glasgow I've seen mobile units by the motorway with cameras on tall telescopic mounts, which may be more advanced in this respect.

thank you for your comment.

Nealy all the Mobile Speed/Safety Vans in our area have their camera's mounted in the rear of a Transit Van with a small window like opening, open in the rear door. They usally park in a lay-by with the rear of the van facing the on coming vehicles.

I'm fairly certain (but not 100% sure) that this type of speed detector targets an individual vehicle only.
