Fist panda 2007 petrol dynamic - Too much oil engine damage - Raaaar
I'm not the first I know but I put too much oil in my car last week, about 1.5 cm above the max mark. I asked a mechanic friend who said no problem so I drove it 100 miles home. However now having read up a little I'm concerned I may have ruined it. It drove home fine. I spent most of the next day trying to symphony some off but what ever I tried failed and I couldn't remove the oil. It started today but I had to turn the key a few times which isn't normal. I didn't notice ant excessive smoke coming from the exhaust but there was a little but I don't know if that's normal, never looked before. I know I need to get it looked at properly but cutting it short I can't afford that right now. If I have killed it (when I checked the dipstick it was oil to the top before I wiped it which makes me think it's the foaming and stuff I've read about) does anyone know how much the worst case scenario is. E bay e nines look to be £300 with delivery and £600 labour ? Would £1000 cover it or am I looking at worse ? Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Playing music to it won't do it any harm, neither will overfilling it that much.

Just don't do any emergency stops, drive over any speed bumps or touch any kerbs.

I'll bear the music advice and others in mind. I know I need it checked but it'll be a week or two before that's possible. Just wondered the worst case.

I wouldn't be worrying about it either.

If you're worried enough and do want to remove the excess, unless you are able to buy or borrow an oil extraction pump, you have to don some latex gloves and undo the sump plug for a few seconds only, messy, be aware if you can't rethread the thing mid flow you'll drain all the oil out, so if it's due an oil an filter change now is as good a time as any.

I tend to agree with what others have said. A couple of years ago I overfilled my Focus by quite a bit. As it happened, a service was due within a few weeks. I've had no problems since, even though overfilling is supposed to put a strain on the oil seals.

If the OP is still bothered, he can buy fairly cheaply a pump to extract some oil via the dipstick hole.

I would go with the majority, I have overfilled engines many times in my 50 years of motoring, usually when doing oil changes and I have never had it cause a problem - if you filled it right to the top then you might have something to worry about.

my ibiza was overfilled at a service. I only knew when white smoke poured out the exhaust after a fast roundabout. A check revealed no damage and the car gave several years excellent service after this.

i wouldn't worry too much over this.

Overfilling can lead to premature catalytic converter failure but most manufacturers dip sticks do allow for a small amount of overfill.

Best to keep to the full mark.

And if it's full enough the big end journals will slam into the surface of the oil every revolution and will wreck the bearings in short order.

Isn't that how Austin 7s and side valve Fords (amongst others) used to lubricate their bottom ends?

Quite probably, but things have changed a bit since then.

What happens in this case is the cranks whips the oil into a froth which is obviously an oil/air mixture. When pumped around the engine the air does not lubricate very well which leads to premature bearing failure.

Thank you everyone.
