Adding to DVD's informed comment here is my uninformed one. I have never heard of a "Joint Keeper". That doesn't mean there isn't such a person but SFAIK there is only ever one name, or Company name, on a V5.

Replaced GEM due to fault with wipers. All working ok now, except keyfob will not operate. Will not lock/unlock , but car starts ok. Do I have to reprograme the keyfob? If so, I only have 1 key (remote keyfob) Can I reprogramme with only 1 key? Or could replacement GEM (fom Scrapyard ) be faulty. GEM came out of a Ghia x

Thanks for reply. When I turn ign on and off 4 times, do I press any button on the fob with the key still in the ign, or do I remove it from the igition first ? Should I hav doors locked or unlocked when I do this procedure- or does it matter. Thanks in advance

My car broke down in France recently and the garage says its the timing chain.

They now want about 600 euro to strip down the engine to see how damaged it is.... Read more

If the agents have never heard of "non interference "engines then he is in the wrong job, stripping the engine down is the only way a true appraisel can be made of the damage. These engines are prone to chain failure and can cost a pretty penny when they fail I believe the kit alone is in the many hundreds plus labour it is often cheaper to write the car off or obtain another engine. If the engine is a belt driven Renault sourced engine then its in its homeland and you may be lucky and get away with a new belt but they fail for a reason either an ancillary part has failed or its passed its sell by date.

request

Hi, I would be very grateful for some help from someone in the car insurance business.

A third party went into my car and his insurer admitted liability. They have just written off my car, category C. I would like to buy it back as it worked well for me.

Unfortunately, my car insurance has run out whilst the car has been in the garage. I have tried lots of insurance companies to see if they will insure my car as a category C write off. But no one will give me a quote, without the car having had an MOT and VIC first.

If the insurance has gone up a lot, it will not be worth it to buy my car back from the insurers, I will just get a new car instead. But I can't find out without doing an MOT etc first - which I don't want to, if the insurance will definitely have gone up loads.

So my question is: (assuming I get my car MOT'd OK) is my insurance quote likely to have gone up a large amount, with my car now being a Cat C?

Thanks so much for your help

Why not ask the insurance company how much the premium would be if it had a full MOT if they will not quote then I would try another company who will.

Hi all.

I have a 2007 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi, with 64k miles (90% motorway driving at 70-80mph). The car has basically been 100% reliable since I bought it when it was nine months old, but recently it has starting 'hestitating' during driving. It feels like a momentary (less than a second) loss of power and usually happens when cruising on a light throttle or pulling away from a junction. No warning lights have been displayed and the car drives normally at all other times. ... Read more

Hmmm.. that looks interesting. Has anybody got any personal experience using them? Or an idea of how much a garage might charge to remove and refit the DPF?

I'm thinking of buying a Mercedes sLK200 (2004 to 2006) and getting it converted to LPG to make the running costs more reasonable. I'm planning to keep the car approx 8 yrs and will do 12k per year. Will converting it have a negative effect on lifespan of engine? Not too worried about whether it goes as fast but do still want it to last a long time. Thanks Read more

My 17 year old 6 cyl MB is thriving on LPG, been over 3 years now and the head has just been off because of an external oil leak, head reported as in perfect condition.

It runs as smoothly on gas as petrol but it doesn't have quite the initial power that it has on petrol but is still more than adequate....

The current govt have had three years to undo his 'unfairness'. As they have not it looks as though there might be a concensus......

Consensus among politicians is always dangerous, though it's unsurprising with all three parties being totally identical in all but name and tie colour....

This week's Autoexpress comments that VW Group made more than twice as much profit as Toyota, even though Toyota had higher value sales. The suggestion was this was because "Toyota was less efficient".

Firstly,Toyota's manufacturing methods have been widely studied and copied, hard to believe VAG have improved on them that much.... Read more

HAS ANYONE OUT THERE DITCHED THEIR EXTRAORDINARILY EXPENSIVE RUN FLATS ON A JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE SRT 8 (2006) AND REPLACED THEM WITH CONVENTIONAL TYRES AND IF SO WHAT TYRES WERE THEN FITTED AND WERE THERE ANY RIDE OR ROAD HANDLING PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED?? Read more

Instead of unnecessarily snapping back at Collos, perhaps Mr SRT might explain just why he chose to ask his whole question in upper case? If he had stopped to read some of the moderators' suggestions before asking, he could have avoided the confrontation. It's just a convention of E-comms that UPPER CASE means a SHOUT.

You fail to state if it is a 1.9 or 2.5. 1.9 generally more desirable.

There is no "correct" price for a used car - they are all different and if they don't need a new cambelt they'll need new tyres.....or a bumper painted.....or new brakes...there is always something. You can only judge it against others and what it is worth to you.
