I have a problem with central locking.I suspect the control uni,t it is situated under the glove box which I have removed.According to the Hayes manual if two screws are removed which holds it in place it can be removed.I have removed the screws but find it impossible. It appears that removal of the complete dash is necessary.
Can anyone suggest a solution and possibly the cause of the unit not functioning.... Read more
Whilst browsing the auction catalogues I notice there are a lot of 'finance' related vendors such as VW Financial Services and Hitachi Capital etc.
Are the vehicles being sold by these vendors repossessions and is there any particular reason they should be avoided?... Read more
Most of the VWFS cars are actually bought by VAG Dealers so end up on the forecourt.
The others are always a mixture - some just end of lease, some early terminations and some repos where the driver didn't pay the lease.
Hi, I have been directed to this forum from South Africa. Apparently, somewhere on this site is a workshop manual for the above vehicle, which can be downloaded. Having just got into the sight, and being unfammiliar with the working, can anybody give me some pointers as to how to get started. It seems very sophisticated compared to ours in SA, and there doesnt seem to be that much info on how to get started. Dont even know how to get back to this page if I sign out, so will stay signed in and hope for the best Read more
XTrail tyres , presently fitted with 215/60 R17 96VMS Pirelli Scorpios. Local tyre dealer now advises that these have been replaced by Pirelli Scorpio Verde. Inputting car regn number into Bluecircle, they advise 225/55R17 W97 for my vehicle. What is the difference? Would you recommend the Verde or any other tyre. The car is used for occasional towing of caravan, occasional off road use as it carries a gundog so rough and muddy tracks. Also used for business, so some motorway use.... Read more

With my Almera only turning out 35MPG I need to be hitting late 50's early 60's as I'm going to the pump twice a week and more.
My problem is, I've only £2,000 to spend and want a diesel car preferably Volkswagen, bullet proof and not a money pit. Read more
I would second the Elantra advice. I had one for years as my commuter car and got 45 mpg average. Spares readily available, Bosch common rail system and injectors. Only got rid because I inherited a Passat and didn't need two cars.
I try to avoid these if at all possible –sometimes though it is unavoidable. In recent years I have had the impression they were upping there game. Now I think not. The other day we stopped at Thurrock Services for a break and something to eat. Although it was not that late (8:00 p.m.) the choice was very limited. Costa only had cakes, etc. available (I am getting fed up with them popping up everywhere from my nearest Tesco to outpatients’ departments), an outlet whose name escapes me had a selection of hot food that looked like it had been kept warm for hours and the burger outlet had a long queue. We ended up getting a sandwich and cold drink from the M+S outlet. Thurrock services 2/10!

Tebay isn't bad. Nice views from Shap Summit! It was awarded a 'Loo of the Year' prize I believe.
I have been chatting to the guy at a local independant garage, who told me that the absolute worst car to buy is an ex lease car.
He has seen plenty of Audis and VWs where they are on long life servicing, so only 4 oil changes in 75 K miles over 3 years, and quite often they still have the ORIGINAL oil and air filters, the oilways are full of black gunge and to him it is very obvious that they supposed Full main Dealer history counts for nothing, as these main dealers regularly fail to perform many of the items that they should. ... A few years ago I had my Ford Ka MOT done at the Alton Ford garage, now fortunately out of business. I was told on the phone some things had to be done, sort of agreed, came back to the garage, and couldn't figure out what the chap was saying had to be done. Anyway, I ended up leaving the car with them and getting a loan car for a few days. I needed the car for work. They said it could not be driven due to failing the MOT. It ended up costing £1,000 for a 9 year old car, and when I got it back, I tried again to find out what needed doing. I ended up having to shout at the top of my voice, before he would give me the original MOT. Yes, I had been screwed, most fixes were advisories. Complete crooks. I spoke with my neighbour. He said his car once failed the MOT at that garage due to rusted brake cables/tubes. Which is odd as they were made from copper. Anyway, they have gone bust. A young mechanic told me noone was having their car serviced with them, they were all going independent. I wonder why.
The next service was at an independent, very polite and efficient, even took apart the non functioning hatch lock, greased it, and put it back, working, for a very reasonable sum. I now have a new car, so go to the VW main dealer, but once servicing gets pricey, I'll go to an independent again. The bad thing about them is that they do not have many parts in stock, so you might have to book the car in twice, and take time off work twice.
