Oh not this again. We don't need this again. Please not again!!

PLEEEEAAAASSSEEEE!!!!!

But road tax was abolished in 1937 and replaced by Vehicle Excise Duty.

A tax is not abolished if it continues to be levied. All they did was change the name.

This is a tax on cars, not roads

Very poor bit of BBC writing. Are they going to tell us Council Tax isn't a tax on councils?

While we're at it; it's not a tax on cars either. Cars don't pay tax. Neither do corperations, banks, inheritances, beer, cigarettes or petrol. They're all taxes on people.

VED is still known as Road Tax even though it patently isn't - I'm not sure it was ever spend on roads even when it was called Road Tax.

So motorists shouldn't claim that cyclists pay no "road tax" - but the fact remains that they don't pay £ thousands per year in VED, Fuel Duty and VAT, can't be identified by ANPR and aren't insured so don't pay even if they are the cause of an accident - no wonder many motorists think they own the road and cyclists have no right to be there.

Most cyclists are insured either through their club or house insanceI have recently purchased a VW up BMT in the UK it is zero rated for VED.I purchase like many other cyclists a lot of parts for which I pay VAT I also run cars for which I pay for the pleasure of using. As Jamie says no matter how you dress it up we all pay tax and always will.

Brown's dispicable con trick - one of many - of basing road tax on emissions has only given Guardianistas more ammunition. Which is all we need.

I have a £475 bill every year for having a car someone might actually want to own, where as overpriced little tofu boxes get it for free.

Your choice. Stop whingeing.

Guardianistas and Scots whinge all the time... As do Liverpudlians and femininists ...

If the Government charged every motorist £475 then I'd say it was stupid, but not unfair.

Why should a Prius get a massive discount based on some total guff about it saving the world?

You're actually paying under £10 a week more than the low emmissions vehicles on the nil rate. Barely a fiver more a week more than I pay for my old 1.9 diesel Berlingo. As part of the cost of running a Jag or whatever it is you drive VED is diddley.

The current govt have had three years to undo his 'unfairness'. As they have not it looks as though there might be a concensus......

If you don't like it then either campaign for change or change to a Smart!!

Consensus among politicians is always dangerous, though it's unsurprising with all three parties being totally identical in all but name and tie colour.

1.9 diesel Berlingo

You unfortunate b******.
