Does anyone know if there is a set interval for changing the gearbox oil?
I've had the car from new and it has just over 129000 miles on the clock. The gearbox oil has never been changed as far as I know. I'm not having any problems, I was just wondering as other engine fluids have a set renewal interval.... Read more

Just found this thread and it is exactly the same as the problem I have with my Mondeo. Erratic idle when 1st started from cold and revs not dropping when depressing the clutch to change gear. It is not caused by the clutch pedal sensor though becase if i knock it out of gear without dipping the clutch the revs still dont drop straightaway. Please reply if you have come accros this problem and have found the reason for it. Many thanks.
My exhaust broke between mid pipe and silencer section and reluctantly took to KwikFit as needed it done pronto. They quoted me £120 for it to be done in a couple of hours so was well happy. He showed me under car and I was shocked how the whole system was badly corroded. Got a call at lunch to say they had fitted new section but it was also blowing from the front. Now having whole new system including cat at a cost of £615!! My question is does this sound a reasonable price? Read more
I think you've been fleeced too.
In the USA cats are warranted for 10 years or 100,000 miles: it's the law!!...
Hi all,
I have a 2003 model Peugoet 307 SW 1.6 petrol. It has been a long time that the brake fluid hasn't been changed. I have two peugeots and I have done all the necessary maintenance jobs by myself so far. So I am guessing that I can also replace the brake fluid. I have already bought a bottle of genuine brake fluid for the car but I need some guidlines about how to properly replace it. Could anyone shed some light?... Read more
If you use the pedal to pump fluid through the system do not use the entire stroke use 60 to 70% or you are exposing the seals to areas of the Master cylinder they have not been and possible contamination. Regards Peter
While driving on motorway Engine warning light (glow plug amber) and Gearbox fault came on. Stopped and checked nothing untoward so conitnued. After a few miles came on again. I was receovered to home. Took it to Jaguar who gave fault code P132B and quoted £1500 for new turbo, actuator and waste gate. I had the turbo charger actuator reconditioned for £240 and all was okay until after about 150 miles (not continuous) of driving the faults came back. The company who reconditioned the actuator took it back free of charge and identified the output motor was not correct and changed it. Again all was well until after about another 100 or so miles the faults reappeared. When faults come up car goes into "Limp mode". Turn off ignition and wait a minute or so and the fault disappears only to return again at some random driving condition. Read more
Redex is very unlikely to have any effect. Just the same with V Power.
You need to get the fault codes read then go from there....
My car has just completed a Full car service in a local official Toyota dealer but I am a bit concerned the service that my car received. After the service, only the "Inter" boxes were ticked by the technician in the service report but not the Full boxes column. As I have ordered and charged the Full Service package, I do not understand that why only the "Inter" boxes were ticked.
I have asked the guy about this question but he said that I was given a "Full 20000 Miles/2 Years Service anyway". However, the evidence (The service report) does not really convince me that my car has been given a full service instead of the intermediate one. Frankly, a Full Service stamp has been offered but I think that safety is more important than just a stamp.
As there is quite a big difference between the Intermediate and the Full service price, I do want to make sure that my car really received the service. It is hard to prove whether the car parts were checked properly up to the full service standard. When it comes to checking, it is really a matter of trust but the evidence that I got does not show that it is the case apparently.
I have tried to contact the General Manager of the dealer but he replied me that he is out of business at the moment.
In addition, I just found out that the Air Filter in my car was still quite dirty and not being replaced but it seems that the full service contains the replacement of the air filter.
How do I know whether my car has been given a Full/Intermediate Service? Should I trust the guy who served me or the Service report? It is an official Toyota dealer and I do try to trust them.

Had similar at a BMW garage. Car was booked in for 5 items of work which needed carrying out according to the service indicator. Oil service, inspection service, brake fluid service, pollen filter service and MOT. Quoted price over phone was £430 which I was happy with. On the day of the service I checked with the receptionist what they were doing the work requested and all appeared OK. On collection I was told they had saved me £30 over the quoted price which was neither here nor there but better than an increase. When i started the car the service indicator was still on thus went back in and asked them to re-set it. Mechanic who had done service came out and said he could not re-set them since the oil and pollen filter items had not been done since they were not on his work sheet.
Went back into showroom not a happy chappy. Service man said the work was another £160 to which I said there was no way I was paying that since it was in the list of original items I was quoted for. After some discussions they agreed to carry out the work for no additional cost blaming the receptionist who originally took my call, this was ammazing since the work and price was confirmed when I dropped off the car....
I had the classic clutch judder on my 18 month old A4 ~ 15K miles of sensible driving. I had it all replaced under warranty but then started to read the whole sorry story of DMFs. As an aerospace engineer myself, I dislike the DMF concept.
My confidence is now shattered with Audi and cannot decide if I want to sell it. It seems silly to get rid of the car after 2 years due to depreciation but feel that my hand is forced. An S-Tronic uses a DMF so that would need seem wise. It seems that a Mercedes C Class uses a goold ole torque converter so that may be the way to go - I just don't know if I can live with the boring dash/interior after driving an Audi!... Read more
I do not follow your argument re the difference between Audi and MB ,MB have used DMF in there manual gearboxes for many years they use a very standard autobox in their other cars. There is nothing to complicated about DMFs used it just about every manual diesel engined car and a lot of petrol versions most do starship mileages you only hear about the few that fail not the millions that don´t.
I had 2 problems the ABS light was coming on regulary, this was cured by fitting an entire abs pump unit cost £20 from local yard, not a hard job, needed bleeding properly. Also the Airbag light was staying on and after reading it was probably the driver airbag squib behind steering wheel or connections under seats (all wrong in this case) it was the control unit that hides at the back of the centre console Voila instant cure.
Obviously electronics are made fast and cheap and can and do fail after plenty of use. Another last ditch way of saving your Airbag lit otherwise solid beauty from ending up 'scrap' is to remove the clock assemble cut the connection-feed to the airbag Positive and link it to the ABS so they both go off together, no airbags in a bump but we did manage ok for decades without them and they are not obligitory even now in most countries.... The vehicle will fail the test if any airbag fitted as original equipment is obviously missing or defective.
A seatbelt pre-tensioner fitted as original equipment but missing or that has obviously deployed will be a reason for failure....
I test drove a Zafira Automatic today, it seemed to drive ok.
It is high mileage (157K) and 1.8 - is it worth the £600 asking price or are my future months/years with it bound to be full of repair bills?... Read more
There are many cars that easily go way past 180k. Just have a peek at the Volvo high mileage club.
The Car Mechanics is July 2013, back issues are available. With the Spanish-built Polo in question oil analysis revealed that a slightly off-standard oil had been used and there was significant debris in the oil. This is a very particular oil, available from VW, also Comma MVMTF. Do Not Use general gear oil !
