MY corsa had no radio when purchased, so I have bought a used vauxhall one from ebay.It works well, however the MFD flickers when the radio is on. Also this causes the clock to slow and gradually it has lost time, so the flickering must be a gradual power drain.
I have been told to cut a wire (or two) at the rear of the MFD and this will solve the problem.... Read more
If someone had previously fitted an aftermarket radio they would have had to switch the permanent live and the switched live, I think these are the red and the yellow. Examine what has been butchered before, before you call in Stanley.
Our old Passat (190k) is getting rrr. older and need few bit and bobs to get her through the MOT and she need a full service (every 20k miles we do this). We have few garages near us and due to the car needing back ASAP (Our only car) I can't shop around too far and have no space to do any work like changing filters etc'. I was given a quote today (South Gloucestershire area) by my regular garage but I can't tell if I am beeing overcharged or not, labor in both garages I checked is around £50-55/hour, can you please tell if this is resonable?

Putting "Magnatec" oil into a VAG PD diesel engine which is serviced at about 20k mile intervals will cause camshaft and follower failure. The correct oil for this duty is a fully synthetic lubricant to VAG specification 507.00.
Allowing these vehicles to be worked on by ill-informed or non motivated parties spells disaster and will grossly inflate overall running costs....
I have a Ford Zodiac with a Granada 2.8 engine fitted and after the car has been running for a while I get back pressure tthrough the rad. cap. I have not fitted an expansion tank to the cooling system, is this my problem?? I have today used Steel seal in case of head gasket failure but after the car was running for a while it just blew the water and £80 of SS out the rad. Any ideas ??? Read more
Cyd's right. Antifreeze has awful heat transfer properties compared to water and it's best to use as little as possible. The only caveat is to keep a close eye on corrosion and change the coolant more frequently-annually rather than every two years. Since you only use half as much antifreeze, the cost is the same.

Noticed on the n-cap story regarding the citan, it shows a combi version.
Will the UK be getting a full passenger version of the citan?... Read more
It's big and square, so not very pedestrian friendly. Minus one star.
The other one probably went on the thing not having quite as many airbags as the testers thought could feasibly have been put inside it, or something equally daft.
I have been having very intermittent problems with the car not starting. It cranks fine but won't start up when it has this problem. Most of the time it starts perfectly. Taking the key out and re-attempting solves the issue and the car starts second time. This leads me to believe that there is an issue with the priming of the fuel pump when turning the ignition on. So there maybe a fault with the fuel pump relay/fuse which would create this intermittent issue.
However the manual which came with the car doesn't give a diagram of all the relays/fuses under the bonnet so I am not sure which one it is for the fuel pump relay? Read more

1. I was driving in a local city, where the cream of students study, the correct way down a one way street and in the space of 100 metres six cyclists cycled towards me. One was texting at the same time. These people do seem incredibly thick!

Do you have the car serviced regularly at a garage? If so the levels should have been checked at the last service.
There are two major components to a conventional automatic, the gearbox itself and the torque convertor. Check the oil level as mentioned above, do it as a matter of urgency as you will cause damage if using it with the level too low.
The torque convertor replaces the clutch in automatic transmissions. It is not possible to do or check anything on it without taking the gearbox out. The torque convertor also contains oil, the main reason for them failing is wear to the seals which allows the oil to escape.
If the gearbox oil level is not low then take it to a local automatic transmission specialist rather than a local garage. It is unlikely a local garage will have the equipment to check an automatic gearbox, they will take it to the specialist and add their charge to any cost of repair.
A good specialist will do some tests and give some idea what the problem is likely to be, they will of course charge a fee for this which is likely to be around the £50 mark. Ask what their fee for this is before you go.
After they have done their diagnosis they will be able to tell you what the cost of repair or replacement will be. If it needs a new auto box or complete overhaul the cost is likely to be in excess of £1500. No idea what your car is worth so you will have to judge yourself whether it is worth doing or not.
