Hi
How long is it possible for a clutch to last? I know you are all going to say that it depends on how you drive, but if you are trying to get to most mileage out of it what would be possible.... Read more
My wife has a 2007 Mini One 1.4 auto with 25000 miles on the clock (purchased by us 2 years ago with around 21000 miles on the clock). She covers about 150 miles every month - mostly town driving. It does get a run down the motorway every couple of weeks. It has a full BMW service history.
I have noticed that it uses about 1 litre of oil for every 800 - 900 miles it covers. My Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTi auto ( also 2007 reg - 34000 miles on the clock) has not required an oil top up since its last oil service (about 6000 miles ago). My Astra covers about 500 miles every month around town with a motorway run every couple of weeks. It has a full service history.
I know nothing about how cars work (and have very little interest in finding out!!!). However I do understand the importance of maintaining them correctly - both cars are serviced when required and the oil level/tyre pressures etc are checked at least every 2 weeks.
I was wondering if it is normal for a low mileage Mini to use such a lot of oil. The Ford Ka my wife drove for 4 years prior to getting the Mini never used any oil between services.
Thank you in advance for any help! Read more
It sounds as if your Mini One was not run in properly in the period before you owned it. By properly I mean given enough work and load to run it in effectively, the cylinder bores could be slightly glazed affecting the piston ring sealing, in other words it's probably been cosseted. Nothing much you can do really, if it isn't causing other problems leave it alone.
There is reference here to a method for bedding in piston rings employed sometime ago on Caterpillar diesel engines - sounds horrible, just included it for interest....
Nissan X Trail 2.2dci SVE, owned from new, 05 plate with just over 75k on the dial, never had anything major until yesterday when the engine decided to throw a con rod at speed. Engine is a complete right off with a fist sized hole in the front of the block. Whole episode so far has knocked my confidence in Nissan vehicles to the point that I may probably never buy one of these makes again.

Hi Guys,
Had this C-max around a month or so now, and it's been absolutely fine to drive. A few small issues sorted out by my local garage, but nothing out of the ordinary for a car of this age. ... Read more
the quickest and easiest option is to stick a bottle of Forte diesel treatment in the tank [maybe with only half a tank of fuel] and run that through. also look at cleaning out the egr, the amount of gunk that accumulates there is unbelievable. an egr blanking plate will cost £4 and well worth doing while you have it all apart.
i cleaned my egr, then ran the forte through it, then ordered and fitted the blanking plate the following week [only a five minute job]. ...
I need to update my sat nav. I believe what is in there is the original from 2005, so it is very out of date. Looking for the least expensive way to get an update from that last year or two. Thanks! Read more

I would suggest either a faulty ignition switch or starter motor.

Has anyone any experience of Hyundai trajets? Going to view one today, 2004, 80,000 miles. £2000.
Can't find a huge amount for sale online so presumed its because they are reliable, but I guess it could also mean because people scrap them.
Also, I know to check oil/rust etc but don't really have a clue when looking at engines. A lot of cars I've viewed recently the engines have been filthy with oil everywhere and sometimes rust which I presume isn't so good. But in beginning to think the last car I bought had the engine cleaned as it was spotless. But that didn't stop the head gasket cracking, even with a full service history after ownership of one year.
Any info on make/model and what to look for would be great thanks :) Read more
Thanks for all the help in this thread everyone :)
I was travelling towards the M3 in a 70 limit. The lights changed, I slammed on the brakes and came to a stop a few feet over the line. The camera flashed twice, probably showing that I was in the same place on both photos.

Hi,
I've just discovered that the rear light unit on my VW Polo (04) has been letting in water some how and was half full of water (at the bottom). The bottom is all rusty/corroded, even the plastic housing is rust coloured. All lights are working except for the lower of the tail lights (the tail light above is working ok).... Read more
