Hi, i have owed this van for about 5 years and never had a problem. Today i made a journey of about 25miles.I turned off and when i tried to start it the battery was almost flat. I then jumped started it and it started alright. When i went to drive away i had no power steering at all. I thought the belt had gone. No lights on the dash came on. After a few hundred yards the steering came back but the gauges were going up an down. It then settled down and i drove the 25 miles home ok.

When i arrived i turned off and tried again all ok. I had a spare battery so changed it over and it started ok, when i tried to steer it, i had no power steering again and also the battery light came on. I haven't had time to investigate further but wondering if any one out there has any ideas.Thanks. Sparky 100.... Read more

Not many people can fix much any more. We seem to have become a society of idiots.

You won't get far with talk of diodes, most of them think the oil pressure light is a warning light....

Our Punto has developed an intermittent loss of power steering. Our garage has reset the steering parameters on the onboard computer and last week cleaned all the electrical connections. However we lost power steering again today. It can be restored by switching off the ignition and restarting but this could be dangerous in heavy traffic.

We are advised that the ultimate solution is to replace the steering column at a cost of approximately £1400 which to us is a major amount. The car was bought second hand in October 2012 with a mileage of 18,000.... Read more

Had the same happen to my daughter's Punto and I bought a replacement column/ECU and fitted it.

That died as well , after it had gone past it's warranty expiry....

Hi

Would like other peoples opinion on whether to upgrade from standard plugs to Iridium, is the initial outlay worth it or stick with replacing standard plugs every 10,000 miles.... Read more

Thanks Guys for all your comments, won't bother with Iridium & stick to ordinary plugs.

The clutch failed at 10,500 genuine miles on my car that was just under 4 years old. Out of warranty, I had a local garage change it in March 2012 at great expence. I thought a proud rivet on the pressure plate was the cause, but since then it was reported in Honest John's web that AP and Borg & Beck clutches were failing due to poor materials, and being replaced with Luk. I did not like the look of the flywheel, and bought a Luk.

The garage replaced the AP with another AP, although I was under the impression they were fitting a Luk. This burnt out last February 2013 at 17,090 miles. Four independent clutch experts examined the two units, and they all said they had not been ridden. All Jaguar Customer Services have offered is 50% off the next service. My last message to Jaguar is that I feel badly let down, plus a few more comments; I am sure there is an issue here regarding Sale of Goods Act 1982? Read more

Hi Geoff,
It is my wife's car. She knows how to use a manual box, and was offended when people said she was riding the clutch. I use it when I am not driving one of my Classics. We do not tow or carry heavy loads; it is used mainly town and country, not thrashed or raced away from standstill. We have a total of over 100 years of driving between us, always with manual boxes. The last time I changed a worn-out clutch was in 1963. I am out of touch with modern stuff, so nowadays have to rely on garages, although I still maintain my 60 year-old Classics. Cpu upgrade? Turbo boost? You've lost me. We treat our machinery with the highest respect. We bought this low mileage car with the idea that we would not have problems for a long time, and feel badly let down.

With ignition switched on,there should be voltage present at one of the wires at the blower motor ,irrespective where the blower switch is set as the system works on an earth circuit switch.Fuse supply should be F 49 30amp in cabin fusebox.hth

Living in North Nothumberland we already suffer from a shortage of Honda Service Centres, the nearest one being in Edinburgh, 60 miles away. Having a Hybrid makes this worse, as specialist equipment is required to service them. Does anyone else in the area have the same problem, and if so have you found anyone closer to home who can deal with them? Read more

I have a 2010 Insight. Servicing is no different from any other Honda petrol engined car.

You can go by the variable servicing or just stick to the 1 year / 12500 miles routine. The latter may be easier if you take it to garages other than the main dealer or wish to go to the dealer infrequently. On variable servicing - the ECU takes account of usage condtions and calculates when an oil change is needed. This can be anything from 6-7k miles ish for mainly short journeys to 16.5k for mainly long journeys at motorway speeds. ...

My wife has a 2007 Mini One 1.4 auto with 25000 miles on the clock (purchased by us 2 years ago with around 21000 miles on the clock). She covers about 150 miles every month - mostly town driving. It does get a run down the motorway every couple of weeks. It has a full BMW service history.

I have noticed that it uses about 1 litre of oil for every 800 - 900 miles it covers. My Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTi auto ( also 2007 reg - 34000 miles on the clock) has not required an oil top up since its last oil service (about 6000 miles ago). My Astra covers about 500 miles every month around town with a motorway run every couple of weeks. It has a full service history.

I know nothing about how cars work (and have very little interest in finding out!!!). However I do understand the importance of maintaining them correctly - both cars are serviced when required and the oil level/tyre pressures etc are checked at least every 2 weeks.

I was wondering if it is normal for a low mileage Mini to use such a lot of oil. The Ford Ka my wife drove for 4 years prior to getting the Mini never used any oil between services.

Thank you in advance for any help! Read more

It sounds as if your Mini One was not run in properly in the period before you owned it. By properly I mean given enough work and load to run it in effectively, the cylinder bores could be slightly glazed affecting the piston ring sealing, in other words it's probably been cosseted. Nothing much you can do really, if it isn't causing other problems leave it alone.

There is reference here to a method for bedding in piston rings employed sometime ago on Caterpillar diesel engines - sounds horrible, just included it for interest....
