Hello,

can anyone advise which would be the best of a bad bunch of the car warranties to go for. Ive looked at warranty direct and works warranty also looked at BMW warranty which is expensive ut they do cover alot. Warranty direct cover wear and tear but some of the reviews are less then complimentry. I know people say all warranties are a waste of money better off saving a few quid every month. But if someone had to recommend one which one would it be. Or have you got a warranty company at the moment they you use and would like to recommend... Read more

Hi, My parents-in-law bought a Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 CTDi SE two months ago from our local Vauxhall franchise dealer. The car was registered in July 2011 (11 plate) and had a number of options added (incl 18" alloys, front and rear parking sensors, fog lights, part leather seats etc - still trying to confirm the full list). They were told that it was the car that the MD had been using and that they were being offered it at an "exceptional price" of just short of £20k (£5k deposit, £15k on finance with GMAC). It had done about 9k miles. Two weeks ago my father-in-law passed away unexpectedly. My mother-in-law will never use the car, it's simply too big. We therefore began looking at selling it to pay off the finance, and here is where we've had a bit of a shock. Having checked a number of valuation sites, including this one, it seems that in the two months since the car was purchased, it has dropped in value to the tune of £6-8k, meaning that there doesn't seem to be enough value in the car now to even pay off the finance. We contacted the dealer who told us that they couldn't possibly buy the car back, even at just the price of the finance, because in the last two months the bottom has fallen out of the second hand car market and they have a glut of Insignias that they're having great difficulty shifting. So, would anyone be kind enough to help us with the following questions: 1. Was that a fair price at the time for the car? 2. Is the dealer telling the truth about the bottom falling out of the second hand car market in the last couple of months? 3. Is there anything that we can do other than pay off the finance and then sell the car privately to try to get the most we can for it? We're not expecting special treatment because of Dad and realise that the dealer has no obligation to re-buy the car. At the end of the day, if the car has lost a shed load of value in the last two months, then we'll just have to accept that (and probably steer clear of Vauxhalls in future). Many thanks in advance for any assistance. Phil Read more

Hi Shooi,

  1. £20k sounds a bit over the top but was there a PX involved? In which case the PX price may have been OTT as well. At the end of the day, it's somewhat irrelavent now
  2. The bottom hasn't fallen out of the second hand market - the dealer is simply trying to justify why he won't buy the car back at a price you want
  3. This is your best bet

Sorry for your loss

Following a minor collision (where no liability attaches to me) I suspect that the TP insurer will deem my 2001 Ka a write-off (book vale £500 versus repair costs £800).

The New Scientist has a report in the edition of 19 May 2012, “F1 blaze sparks hunt for answers”, about the accident in the pits at the recent Spanish Grand Prix. 31 people needed medical attention after a fire broke out in the Williams pit-lane after a fire broke out as engineers attempted to dismantle a damaged car.

The article raised the question as to whether the fire was caused by a battery situated beneath the fuel tank. The battery is/ was used to provide a speed boost lasting 6.6 seconds every lap.... Read more

Thank you MrEckerslikefromRamsbottom.

How often do we read read the phrase, "Procedures have been put in place" after an incident that was down to plain overconfidence ?

Valve seat erosion usually happens at higher speeds and rpm, when more heat is generated -- if you're driving around fairly gently at 50 / 60mph it shouldn't be a big issue anyway. But a dose of the valve seat protectors mentioned should do the trick.

I am changing th rear wiper blade. I am unable to reomve the old one at preent. I see the retaining clip on the existing blade. I have tried pushing it in & out but neither releases the blade. I expect that i am not pushing hard enough, but do not want to push too hard for fear of breaking the wiper arm. Does any one know which way to push it or whether the blade is released in sonme other fashion?

Many thanks... Read more

You'll be doing it right... but it'll be well stuck on if it hasn't been touched for a couple of years. Try squirting a bit of penetrating oil on it... but protect the paintwork with a bit of rag.

you can come to an arrangement with them whereby you receive their offer and keep the car, its unlikely to be enough to repair the car i feel.....if you wish to kkep the car on the road for sentimental attachment then more power to you,but insurance is brutal, plus the car once repaired will be registered as as accident damaged and then that affects future insurance!! you cant win!!
