Planning on buying a new VW Golf. Originally I had my mind set on a 1.2 TSI 105 BHP. Then the sales guy turned my head and I got interested in a 1.6 TDI.
But I have heard with my low mileage (5,000 miles/year) there might be problems in a TDI with the filter (DPF) or flywheel (DMF).... Read more

I don't think it' the EGR - it would smoke all over the place in most cases. Split intercooler would produce a loud hissing sound. To me it sounds like either the wastegate is stuck open or the boost pressure sensor has packed up.
When car is left for a few days, the battery is flat. No lights are left on & I have fited a new battery.
Have you any suggestions as to what is causing this. Read more
What age is this car?
They have just released the auto accident death rates in Germany 3750 died the lowest since records began in 1950 when 7408 died reaching a climax in 1970 when 21332 died, source ADAC.Cars have obviously got safer in that time, there was a slight blip upwards in 1990 when unification came but has declined every year since but its still a lot of sadness to relatives and friends . Just wondering a bit about some of the contributors and their connection to Honest John, Lucybc, What is your business connection to the site, I see that you often refer people to advisors, Avant where are you, tell us poor mortals a bit about yourself, and Star of the show Andy Bairsto are you really in Germany, let us know... Just in case, i have found the site helpful at times but also some of the unresearched replies bizarre. Can HJ ask manufacturers to post information too?
Ps noticing the problems with Vag injectors on this site, will steer clear of any vag diesel from now on, but does anyone yet have any issues with the small engined high power turbos vag are using, IE oil consumption, wear and tear etc..... Read more

Hi took my car out and it started as normal drove to petrol station and after puttin petrol in the car wouldnt start again. I tried a jump start as i thought i was the battery that didnt work and bump jump start it nearly turned over but the hill was 2 small and was full of snow and ice so wasnt able to get it back up the hill. I got it recovered to my house the recovery man said it was an unexplained electrical fault but he didnt really have a clue! I have more mechanical knowledge and mine is limited. Got a friend 2 look at it and he thought it might be the relay as it was ticking wen the key was turned so i got a new relay and that hasnt helped. It is still ticking with the new relay in, do u think it could b the starter motor and if so is there any way of testing it to find out before i go and buy any more parts for it. Any help would b gratefully appreciated thanx Read more
You first need to prove that there is 12v going to the starter if there is either the starter is faulty or the starter bendix has jammed on the flywheel. One way is to hit the starter hard with a piece of solid wood or lump hammer whilst try to start some times this has the desired effect of freeing a jammed starter.
If you have no supply to the starter you need to trace the circuit backwards is the ignition opererating the starter relay ?is the starter relay working properly?if yes do lights go dim when you try and start a sure sign of a jammed starter....

Thanks for reply. The information was very useful.
That has made my mind up - I won't be buying a diesel - stick to a petrol.
