This weekend I took my son and 3 of his friends to the cinema, on my way there the heavens opened & it began to snow very heavily it was actually as bad as any blizzard I had seen (and I'm not exaggerating). I decided to park the car close to the train station and walk to the cinema from there as I didn't want to stay on the road for any longer than I absolutely needed to. Upon returning to where the car was parked I discovered it had been towed away. It cost me £550 to get the car back! I am currently in the process of appealing the fine and have taken a picture of one of the signs which state it is private property which is covered in snow. I plan to take the firm to a small claims court if I am not re-imbursed but wondered if you had any pointers/tips for the process.

Many thanks.... Read more

You need a map of the area showing the positions of the signs and a photograph of the signs showing the wording.

The relevant case law is Vine -v- LB Waltham Forest which suggests that the signs have to be prominent and unmissable. There are also bits of case law surrounding what is, and what is not, "reasonable".

The route to take is to issue proceedings as you say. It is also worth checking the SIA register to be sure they are up to date and legal.

Whats a safe speed to travel on the motorway in this weather? I was travelling home on a high speed train (itself limited to 100 mph) and there were some cars keeping nearly keeping pace with us on the adjacent motorway! Read more

You just have to judge for yourself according to the conditions. One time that is very scary is when it's started to snow on a cold dry road and there's a light dusting. Cars start to lose their grip before heavier vehicles, which bite through the snow more and also have hotter tyres. I've been in a situation where I was struggling to control a car on a main road at 25 mph with a loaded lorry tailgating me. Eventually he overtook, leaving completely melted tracks on the road.

This transient effect passes as the snow gets deeper and heavier vehicles start to lose grip too.

i have just put a 2nd hand alternator on my car and it doesnt seem to be giving any power to the battery is there any fuses or relays that can stop it from charging the battery as my other half is pregnant i cant be without the car. Any help is much appreciated thanks Read more

Peter.N.

Assuming the replacement alternator is OK the only thing that is likely to stop it charging is lack of exciter voltage, this is normally fed through the charge lamp, does yours come on?

As an experiment you can bypass it by connecting a wire from battery + to the small terminal on the alternator, if its OK it should then charge....

I don't think so, just a case of we're boned, abandon ship! So slippy they couldn't even stand. If you're going to do it, do a proper dive at least.

Hose pipe into washer bottle filler neck on a gentle pressure until it overflows and keep flushing until water runs clear then thoroughly wash off surrounding area with clean water. Add some strong screenwash solution to stop the new water freezing.

This will be single point fuel injection.A basic system but it worked reasonably well for its time.I can't recall any vac pipes attached to the injection unit, but there is an important vac pipe that runs from the manifold up to the map sensor on the bulkhead.Make sure this feels solid and not soggy. This pipe can collapse internally and cause running and starting issues. This system does have limited diagnostic facility ,so maybe you can find someone with the correct hook-up lead to read the engine management system.I would think this car is too early to have the 16 pin Obd diag system.hth

Thanks for the above info....

that is some repair quote! I thought Nissans were supposed to be ultra reliable. They used to be really tough cars years ago with not much style admittedly but went on and on.
