Hi,

I am trying to make a list of things you have to do in order to easily start your car during these cold periods. These include:... Read more

If you have one, put the car in the garage overnight.

When you take it out it'll be colder in there than outside but it'll have avoided the extreme night temperature.

Reading around recently about batteries in general, it does seem that some new charging systems are so sophisticated that they do indeed upon having a particular battery technology in place. Fords especially I seem to remember.

Hi we have a bit of a problem with the driver side headlight. We have now gone through 4bulbs in 12months on one side. The last time it went the bulb actually came back on for a day before ceasing to work altogether. I'm wondering whether this is maybe a regular electrical fault with our model or if we're just unlucky? I would have thought a 3 and a 1/2 year old car is very young to be developing electrical faults?

We have the lights set auto generally so they are on more often than I'd probably do manually but that wouldn't explain the it being one particular side.... Read more

My husband and I had a go at changing the bulb first time around but the whole light fitting has to come out and we made a pigs ear of it. He recons if he can watch them do it once he'll be able to do it next time. Bulb changing isn't the issue though, it's the fault I'm concerned about.

Our focus is currently on hire purchase and we intend to buy it at the end of the term in a couple of months so I was really looking for any indication that this might be a regular fault or whether it's the start of anything more sinister. I've had previous experience of imtermitted electrical faults in a previous car and I don't care to repeat the experience as it cost a fortune and never actually fixed the problem resulting in me eventually selling the car as I completely lost confidence in it. That started off simply as what appeared to be an idicator switch and progressed to the point that it would cut out without warning on a regular basis. I suspect and hope we just have a simple problem with the focus as it's been perfect otherwise but once bitten and all that.

Cannot be certain as insurance is based on a contact but in every case I have seen Drive Other Cars benefit only applies to the principal insured person (not a named driver) who takes out a comprehensive policy.

I have never seen the benefit given to someone who only has Third Party Fire and Theft Cover.

I think my 130PD PAssat is running a bit rough (as per other thread) and it has been suggested I get diagnostics run. However someone has told me that I should get a vcds rather than VW diag. Can someone explain to me the difference, why is one better than the other (surely VW should know how to diagnose their own faults). Who is likely to be able to offer a VCDS diag in Basingstoke or Bournemouth area's? Read more

If you follow this link http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/74720-vag-com-diagnostic-system-vcds-owners-map/ there are people with VAG-COM & VCDS who would probably be willing to help.

It is a Skoda owners site but the Superb is basically a Passat with different clothes....

My wife's puma over revs when trying to accelerate at speed. The higher the gear the worse it is. My local garage changed a control unit on the engine but the problem still persists. Does seem worse in these cold conditions. Does anyone have any ideas what to try next. Many thanks. Read more

Watch the rev counter, if it goes up independently of speed increase - your clutch is slipping. As has been said, don't let it slip or it will fail very quickly, drive it gently and it could last thousands of miles.

From my observations, all other things being equal, cars fitted with those low-profile, high performance tyres seem to be having the most trouble coping on packed snow and ice.

I mean those tyres with the minimal tread pattern, like a couple of circumferential rings and long curving grooves. Even worse if they're fitted on a rear-wheel-drive car!... Read more

4mm on 'allweather' Geolanders (Geosquealers due to their distinct averageness in wet/dry) on Forester had not a jot of bother on up to 8-10in snow, and packed snow-ice.

Ok, I am at my wits end with this problem.

My Mondeo has now let me down twice in the past two weeks and I am convinced it's because of the cold weather.... Read more

if your filter blocks again rather sooner than expected you may have a problem with bacteria in the fuel system. To diagnose the filter needs to be cut open & the element checked for a black film.

I saw this problem in my younger days on an old combine harvester of all things....

I purchased a new Rover 45 in March 2005. As the initial warranty had expired I purchased an extended 3 year warranty from WMS Warranty product services in April this year. I have been told that as I have signs of oil in the radiator header tank and I have to add 1 litre of coolant every 150- 200 m iles I must have a leaking cylinder head gasket. A 12 hour pressure test has given no evidenc e of any leaks. The head gasket is covered by the policy. I am suposed to stop and seek expert advice as to the cause if a fault becomes evident to the driver. . The claim will only be considered if a "mechanical fault" occurs within the policy period. Do I drive until the water level warning light comes on and report it as a fault to the garage that sold me the policy . Can a visual inspection at the road side conform a leaking cylinder head gasket? Please advise me. How much harm will I do to the engine if I continue to drive? The milage was 31,000 miles when I bought the policy and now 34,000 miles. Read more

Take it to the Garage as soon as possible if you don.t it could lead to a very expensive repair, make sure the garage uses the modified head bolts, planes the head, replaces the thermostat, replaces the O rings on the inlet manifold and uses the new type head gasget if the don.t you will have the same problem again very soon.
