It's normal practice in South Africa (and possibly other parts of the world) - mostly young men desperate for a tip. Quite possibly it's their only source of income.

But it isn't normal practice in the UK, which is why one should be suspicious.

Has anyone sold their car for cash at a dealer rather than trade in? I really wanted to sell privately, but no takers. I know I will lose a lot on a trade in. Probably might lose a little less on selling for cash? anyone got any experience?

Hi, I'm wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction with a problem I'm having...

The engine generally runs fine, but randomly on some journeys with no pattern as to why, the engine will start missing at low revs (between 800 and 2000rpm), if you rev the car up and release the throttle it drops to about 400rpm then returns to around 800ish but fluctuates +/- 100 rpm constantly.... there are certain brands of diesel that seesm to encourage a bacterial infection in the tank causing a black film which is very fine and block pre filters & line filters. I have seen cars with aa little as 9k on the clock with black slim blocking the filters.

there are of course many on this forum who will disagree and say all derv is the same so i will not name the brands more well known for this problem but belive you me it excists. having said that if your cars has done considerable milage you can expect some black sludge around the pre-filter anyway....

Car has done 33k miles.Started making a rattly noise when increasing throttle also going uphill.No loss of performance. Engine tested(computer) by two Toyota agencies-nothing found. Some "diesel " folk tell me it may be a dirty EGR valve and Injectors! please explain?Also told not to use supermarket fuel. I am starting to use Shell V fuel if that helps-will it take a while to clear? Will there have been any engine damage done? Will I need the injectors replaced?

Hi, you need some running data from the engine, when toyota plug in, they need to look at data and not fault codes and need to check the running values of the injectors, they have a tolerance, and if the injectors are out of spec, they will need replacing and coding to the car, you can NOT simply replace plug an play, although the engine will run.

Hi peter just went out and tried car and after 3 rd attempt it has started i held the key in the normal engine start position for 3 or4 seconds and it started yeeh after it had started took car a drive came back stopped the car turned it off and then back on it started as normall thanks for all your help

I have a BMW 5 series Touring where the tailgate won't open. To open the boot I have to release the catch manually from the inside. When I close the boot I can hear the motor grab the tailgate and pull it tight. When I try and open from the outside I can hear the motor turn over but it doesn't release the tailgate or the luggage cover. Does anyone have any experience of this problem ? I have got a problem with my 2004 Focus C-Max 2.0TDCi.

When the air temperature (not engine temperature!) is cold the engine management warning light comes on. It is pretty consistent on cold days. The car seems to run fine (although it has a very tappety idle and it is a bit misfiry around 1,000 rpm - but then it is normally). The light does not go off during driving.... Read more

It could be injector coding as they tend to wander out after 60-70k and shows up more when cold and around 1150 rpm it would feel like its on 3 1/2 cylinder's

My Renault scenic 54 plate 1.6L 16V has got a problem and needs help. ok I had the dashboard display replaced about 2 weeks ago by Renault cost £100 (Renaults fault the dash display goes off) then all of a sudden the emission warning light came on and the car runs ruff just ticking over on the drive, and a spluttering noise comes from the back of exhaust, when I try to accelerate the car loses power. Also it’s using alot more petrol than before so I changed the spark plugs (quite easy to do) and there is a big difference in the way it runs BUT the warning lights back on and the car is slowly starting to run ruff again. I have a VW Golf 1.6 FSI (56 reg) that started playing up a few days ago (noticeably shaking even when stationary with the engine running, misfiring and therefore lack of power etc.).

I have the same model and year of vehicle and had a nasty incident whereby we had a fire in the engine bay when starting the vehicle on xmas eve. Thankfully the fire didnt take hold so noone was hurt and nothing serious came of it.

Our garage diagnosed it as a faulty coil that ended up burning. We had previously had issues where the car starts to misfire and the engine felt lumpy, and this is what happened when the coil caught fire. I think there must be a defect with the coils on this model car. I might get in touch with VW, see what they say....

Not an uncommon fault on these.Either the motor itself has expired ,or the electronic fan speed module has failed.Access to both is up behind the glovebox from the passenger footwell area.Remove under dash plastic panel first to reveal 3 pin connector to fan unit.hth
