Trying to identify a rattle. It is worse when riding and shutting down throttle, noise seems to go away when under acceleration. Chain has always been lubricated and has got about 1 1/2 " of play , no real tight spots on chain. Chain & sprockets were replaced about 2years ( 8000 miles ago). Don't think chain is worn as can't pull off rear sprocket. Seems to make a slight groaning noise when pushed around the garage, have got another bike and this does not make same noise.
Tried putting it on paddock stand and get sort of groaning noise when rear wheel rotated same as when pushing it. Checked rear sprocket and looks OK, no shark fins shapes as I have been told this is sign of wear.... Read more
Hi All,
My 2nd hand car came with a few problems that are draining the battery. If i dont start the car in 2 or 3 days the battery will go flat. And nobody knows where the problem really comes from!... Read more

We seem to ge getting a spate of cases where people are being pressed by their insurers to accept split liability when they seem clearly to be non-fault accidents.
I have had one this week where the other oncoming driver clearly misjudged the gap in traffic to turn right crossing the client's lane and resulting in a collision and 4 injuries - the insurer has urged settlement at 70:30 against our client.... Read more
I have worked in the insurance industry for many years, too many to mention. I have previously worked in Underwriting, however I now work in Liabilty motor claims.
I dont profess to know all, but I am happy to give advice where possible. ...
My dad's neighbour has recently suffered starting problems with his Zafira (3.5 years old, out of warranty).
Occasionally gets slow starter motor operation. Once failed to start due to flat battery - 7V according to RAC technician. This was 30 minutes after a 5 mile journey. Started OK with jump leads; RAC said alternator was charging OK.... Read more
Is it fairly common to see batteries start to fail at this age? The last five cars in my family have seen their original batteries last from 6 to 11 years.
The car is mainly used for short journeys, quite a number per day, so I guess this could contribute to premature battery failure (as well as alternator and starter motor)....
the orange warning light (thats the one witth a square box with a spiky graph and a spiral under )comes on when i start cold, off when i restert from warm. I have drained the fuel filter as it said to do, but no water was evident. Van runs fine. just the tickover revs are wavering up and down slightly. Any ideas guys?? Read more
Isn't that what it should do ,telling you the glowplugs are on due to it being cold. The rough tickover is more than likely the EGR valve dirty.
If two identical s/h cars were advertised and one of those was a "Vat qualifying" car, would one expect this to be more expensive than its equivalent non qualifying counterpart as a much larger percentage of the price will go to HMRC and not the dealer?
If this was correct, then a good rule of thumb for the private 'non vat registered' person would be to avoid them as they are a more expensive option ?... Read more
My girlfriend is thinking about replacing her car and she should be able to claim VAT back as she has MS.
Anyway my understanding (hopefully someone can correct me if I'm wrong on anything) is that to claim VAT back you need to be a disabled wheelchair user and the vehicle must have been specially adapted for your use....
Friends came over to ours on Sunday. Husband ( our wives know each other via kids, have only met the hubby once before ) asked me to see their new car. Was initially impressed ' 57 reg S Line Q7 litre diesel 3.0 in black, 30k miles on clock . But soon bells were ringing :
When you bought the car ? yest ( Sat 6th Nov )... Read more
If evidence exists (the R1 for instance) it needs to be raised at a higher level than the apparently disinterested front counter. Corruption in all it's forms (omission and commission) isn't just a South American habit. A little oxygen of publicity might help: MCN can be relied on for hysteria.
Has anyone on this forum EVER received a fine for exceeding the average speed limit imposed with cameras. Because it appears more and more vehicles are being driven far faster than the speed limits set, even with the threat of cameras. Read more
The average speed cameras seem to deter excessive speed that is true. This is no good for the money hungry 'safety camera' brigade. There were fixed average speed cameras on the A77 for some time, but because people got wise and more or less observed the limit the money dried up. Guess what? They were removed and now we get mobile camera vans, stinks a bit in my humble opinion. Regarding travelling through areas with these devices though, I always stick fairly close to the HGV speeds which can sometimes indicate quite a bit above the limit. But they are using a Tachograph which should be very accurate whereas my speedometre probably isn't. The annoying part is, there is always some timid soul who will insist on doing 48mph in a 50mph zone. If their speedometre is reading high then are only probably doing 44ish. This then bunches the traffic as HGV and others catch up but do not like overtaking. On the whole though drivers are usually quite well behaved around these cameras because you just never know. Hi,
I'm looking for some hellp / suggestions here, sorry if this has been asked before but I really know nothing about cars other than where the fuel and windscreen wiper fluid goes in.... Read more
That suggestion about staying up during the week and only coming home weekends. Seems pretty sound to me. B&B perhaps but don't overlook a static caravan. People like Park Resorts are currently giving them away (old ones to be sure). The months site fees work out at about a weeks fuel costs. So it's cost effective. Sites usually close for about six to eight weeks over Christmas/New Year. Otherwise it's a cheap easy option.
I do about 75mile s a day round trip and thats as much as I want to do. If you can do 200 and still be fresh as the proverbial daisy, then 'your a better man than I am gunga din'.
I have the unenviable task of sorting my daughters car out for her to sell .... Read more
Thanks everyone plent for me to chew over there. kev

Some sideways play on the front sprocket isn't a concern as long as the sprocket nut is secured properly. I wonder if the wrong sprocket was fitted in the first place? Anyhow nice to hear it's sorted, a regularly lubed chain and sprockets should last 20K+ on a four cylinder bike. I got 25K out of my last set (Hayabusa) including doing some drag racing and track days.
