I hve a 1996 Fiat Bravo 1.6 which has done 30,000 miles. When I accelerate fast the engine revs up but car doesn't move until I take the power from the accelerator. Does this mean the clutch is burnt out or could it be that the clutch needs adjusted? Read more
Most modern clutches are self adjusting, it shouldn't be worn at 30k unless it has been abused, it could be that it has oil on it but the more you let it slip the quicker it will fail, if you drive it carefully and don't let it slip it could last thousands of miles more.
I have a Y reg Galaxy that has just started to cut out as you are driving. I pull over to stop and then start the car straight away. Need help to identify the problem. Thanks Read more
probably need more detail, engine, size, fuel type, any work done recently, serviced last etc
A little problem with my Micra... When the headlights are off and i press the brake pedal, the brake lights work but the side lights also come on. When the headlights are on and i press the brake pedal, the brake lights work but are very very dim, probably illegally so.
I'm sure i can sort the problem myself, its just directing the hammer to the right part... :)... Read more
I would guess that one of the brake/tail bulbs is faulty or a problem with a rear lamp holder contacts.hth
All sorted now. After checking the old bulbs, it turns out that one of them was a single filament bulb rather than a duel. Something so simple....
Unfortunately I have to park under a silver birch tree and what with consequent bird lime, sap and leaves, the bootlid has nasty black stains all over it. I read in your column about some sort of clay preparation that can shift this lot but I have forgotten the name; I think it starts with 'M'. Many thanks. Read more
Probably Meguiars Clay http://tinyurl.com/33yv5kz but I prefer Bilt Hamber Clay which only requires water to lubricate while you use it. http://tinyurl.com/2ujdbkz
Obviously the clay will strip any protection off the paint as well as the staining so it will need a good polish and wax afterwards.
My car has covered 33K and BMW confirm that the gearbox is sealed for life and that they do not recommend any service to them.
To me as an ex engineer this sounds incredible, my investigations reveal that the oil deteriorates with time and/or constant use and that oil and filter on auto boxes should be changed at circa 35K, have BMW found the holy grail or do they just ignore the auto servicing.... Read more
If you look on one of the BMW forums there is a method described for changing the oil a bit complex whether it. worth it I wouldn't know.I have a 5 series auto myself and often wonder what is best.
I recently fitted a new air mass meter (205,000 miles) as I'd noticed loss of power and smoke which were not evident when the AMM was unplugged. The symptoms remained, even after fault codes were reset at a local garage.
Anyone know what i need to do to get the car to run properly and smokeless with the new AMM plugged in?... Read more

I have had always a soft spot for the Brits, going to sea with my dad as a youngster. He was a hard man he had me working as a able seaman dad was captain but no favours for me.I have travelled through europe into germany scandinavia. We met some nice people in france have been invited next time we go if funds allowed.
My car's indicators have stopped working. I live inFrance and drive a RHD vehicle which is fitted with a standard alarm system (unlike the LHD version). My French garagist mechanic can't find a way to disarm the alarm system in order to replace the flasher unit. Is it possible to download a wiring diagram for this car? Has anybody else had a similar problem?

Last year I worked in Spain for a while and got one of these once as a rental. Unlike most Spanish rentals, this one felt brand new, so I was surprised to see it had 20k clicks on the clock.
Very impressive car for the money.
