Last Saturday I was in the 50mph section just before the pay booths on the Servern bridge and my wife noticed a seped camera van on a bridge. Of course it was too late and like everyone around me I was doing over 50mph. I might be lucky but anyone any idea how long NIPgenerally 's take. I know about the 14 days for issue but just wondering, hoping .....

If you are the Reg Keeper of the vehicle involved and have not recently notified a change of ownership on aquisition then they have up to the last post on 30th October 2010 to serve NOIP. Delivery after this debars a prosecution for speeding..

But if it is outside this time and there is a 172 Form (name and shame the driver) with the paperwork then THIS MUST BE COMPLETED and returned within 28 days otherwise an offence....

I recently returned a courtesy car to an insurer approved garage in Wembley. We sorted out my car but then went to check over the cortesy car and found 1 scraped alloy and a neat 6 inch scratch on the passenger front wing that I diodn't recollect seeing before. I kicked myself because I hadn't made my own check prior to walking in, however the eagerness with which they handled this, the practised way that they told me it had happened while the car was "in my care" and the way that they were able to give me a quote off an almost identical recent occurrence left me feeling I may have been scammed. I guess they get a few damaged courtesy cars back all the time and the scenario of one of their staff nipping outside to scratch the car while I'm in the office doing the paperwork seems almost ridiculously paranoid on my part, but I have a real nagging doubt about this incident. I checked on google but dont see anyone else reporting the same sort of thing, normally they say the drop the car off and the garage phones them later on saying they found the scratch dent etc. These guys went through a joint inspection with me so am I just being ridiculously paranoid, or has anyone else seen this sort of thing before?

There is a well-known car rental company - used by a lot of insurers - which does this all the time. It's an income stream.

They never repair the "damage", the car is sold after its 1 year stint. Often several people in a row will be accused/charged for the same damage. The amount they demand is out of all proportion to their cost - they never repair it and the effect on the value of the vehicle is minimimal....

Why is it that the advertised fuel consumption figures are never achievable I find this so annoying. I have been driving for the best part of forty years now and have never managed to equal or better these figures. As I understand it these figures are derived at in the test lab and if that is fact, then why are manufacturers allowed to state that this is achievable on the road when quite clearly it is not, surely a case for trading standards and dare I say it compensation for the mis sold motorist.

(Any further threads started unspecifically as this was with words like "Why is is" and nothing else will be summarily deleted. HJ.) Read more

All three cars I have had I have always been able to meet or beat the combined MPG for the car - unless I have been doing a lot of traffic jams or very fast motorway traffic.

I don't you can really come up with a measure that will be perfect for everyone so at least what we have now give a standarised test for all cars - although now hybrids are getting more popular there may need to be some changes done.

I am wondering if someone here is familiar with this bike.

I am trying to remove the ignition lock as I have lost the key. I have removed the steering stem bolt, suspension bolts to the top of the yoke but I still can't remove the yoke. The steering lock is on.... Read more

Not familiar with the deauville but possably
the same as my blade.

What it you jack up the front end and drop
the forks down below the top yoke. You will
still have to drill out the anti tamper ignition
bolts, but that's not too bad. Does it have the
Hiss system?

I'm seriously looking at purchasing a Honda Jazz, hopefully the last of the previous model. I was looking at Civics but grim cutbacks at work mean fuel economy is going to be paramount now, as will long term reliability. I've been a bit put off by reports on here about gearbox problems on manual Jazz models. I wondered if getting a CVT-7 model would sidestep this issue.? Perhaps the gearbox problems are isolated and I'm worrying unecessarily? I'm guessing the CVT 'box will be complicated but if its reliable then that won't, in itself be a problem, will it?

I looked briefly at the new model; it looks great and seems to have better suspension but again gearbox probs reported plus its still new enough that I'd get stung for big depreciation. I've always tended to buy cars at the end of their production run, reasoning that most major problems will have been sorted out by then (another reason to avoid '09-'10 models).... Read more

I recently bought an 07 manual Jazz and am very pleased with it overall. It's a brilliant package but the major downsides of it as discussed elsewhere are the ride and the busy engine. The ride is tolerable but I was used to a Passat which was a lot more comfortable on bad road surfaces. The gearing is quite low and the result is high revs at high speeds - having said that, it's not an unpleasant noise just a bit tiring.

As for gearbox probs, it depends whether you plan to carry on getting it serviced by a Honda dealer. If so, as I understand it, Honda will fix the manual bearings or CVT under goodwill. My mother-in-law has an 04 CVT with 65k that had a CVT clutch problem recently - fixed free of charge by the Honda dealer where she has it serviced. Apart from that problem, her Jazz has been perfect for 6 years. The CVT is surprisingly good to drive but my manual is better....

Can anyone tell me if this vehicle has a particulate filter?. The reason I ask is I am retired and will not cover the miles necessary to keep this type of filter clear of contamination. The dealer I spoke to reckons it doesn't but wasn't 100% sure.

Would be grateful for any info.... Read more

I realise this post is a little old now, but for anyone else worrying about this I don't think you have to unless all your driving is stop/start driving in town. Check out the link to the AA website:

"It should be possible to start a complete regeneration... ...simply by driving for 10 minutes or so at speeds greater than 40mph."...

The car has done 90,000 miles. It has never towed. It does do a lot of steep hills!
the clutch has started slipping occasionally. Worse in wet weather.
Phoning around for prices, some garages say I will almost certainly need a dual mass fly wheel as well. This takes the price from 400 to 1500.

How can tell if this is correct? what are the symptoms of a worn dual mass flywheel? At the moment, there is no judder/squeak or any other feel or sound - just an occcasional slippage.

thank you Read more

While it is stripped down most sensible garages advice you change the flywheel and its good advice saves having to go through the execise all again in the near future. You can fit a normal flywheel and clutch to this model at a much cheaper price and also £1500 is way over the top had the same done on a Saab last year was under £1k and that was at a main dealers.

I'm just about to buy a brand new car from my local dealership (who have been excellent by the way) and today my current car that I'm part ex'ing developed a fault with its stability control system. I don't want to give makes and models to remain anonymous, but I've had the fault checked and ti could be one of two things, one (the more likely) will cost £100-200 and the other £1000-1200.... I'm supposed to be picking up my new car in a day or so and so I have no time to get the fault fixed. I'm under pressure from the dealership to complete the delivery as well, presumably so they can meet monthly quotas.

When the dealer looked over my car a couple of days ago he didn't start the engine but did an otherwise thorough check on it, but at that time there was no fault anyway. He gave me an ok part ex figure, but not quite what it was worth. I did get a good dealer deposit contribution though so I was happy with that. The question is, do I just turn up, hand over the keys and drive away in my new one and say nothing? Then just say that it was ok when I dropped it off if they phone me and have a go? This edition of the car doesn't store dates and times of faults so there's no way they could prove I knew the fault already existed.... They're probably going to auction it anyway as it's 6 years old and isn't their marque. I realise that part ex figures are designed to take account of the odd fault that needs fixing but my honest side is making me wrestle with my conscience!! ... Read more

I used to own a Y reg mk3 mondeo 2litre LX. standard 16" steel wheels with plastic trims all totally standard. When i needed 4 new tyres I did some searching and found a Ford breakers in Essex, (I live in Oxfordshire) I then bought 4x mondeo ghia 17" alloy wheels+ tyres for my car for £100 less than getting standard replacement tyres for the 16" wheels. (rep had written off his car 20miles after picking it up,. the tyres still had the waxy green marking around the tread...so I bought wheels and tyres for less than a set of 16" tyres for my car....but......thought like you...standard wheels on the same model..insurance said it was a modification and loaded me £50. the same amount as if i'd just bought some aftermarket stuff from Halfords......
