Please advise on what I should be looking for at to be done for 54 plate jazz on its upcoming MOT and service. It had new brake pads last year, new spark plugs in 2008 and brake/clutch fluid in 2007. Is there anything else that is coming to the end of its life that should be renewed/replaced? I am 73 years old and do about 5000 miles per year. I would like the car to see me out. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thankyou.

No in-service requirement in the UK that I know of but ask the firm for an explanation. The E/e approvals are granted after seeing and checking samples of the tyres and also, possibly, more important, checking their manufacturing facilities and checking samples of their production, not just what was submitted to get the initial approvals. If you can't get a satisfactory explanation, take it up with Trading Standards.

Without entering into an inappropriate dicussion of why a particular person might need a new identity can anybody explain why it should be so costly?

"The Daily Telegraph reported ?????- who along with ????? ????? battered and murdered ????? ?????- will be issued with a new birth certificate, national insurance number and other identity documents at a cost of £250,000 when he is released"

A National Insurance number is free, how can anything else an individual might need truly 'cost ' £250,000... Read more

Didn`t several people get new identities themselves following reading a certain novel? I can`t remember anything about it other than - was it seaching for a grave to get a birth cert?

What are your thoughts on the stop/start technology cars. On a 2 mile journey into my local town I can easily stop 10 to 15 times, more during rush hour. It seems to me that there is considerable extra wear and tear on the starter motor, battery, flywheel gear ring, snatch on the cam belt/chain drive and many other systems which would be better contiuing to run smoothly rather than stopping and starting many times. I doubt the carbon savings are worth it from a cost and inconvenience point of view.

Read the handbook;on most cars with this feature,a number of controls need to in a set position for it to operate.Handbrake on on some-on others position of clutch pedal etc..As you say,it looks good in the adverts but makes little difference to the average motorist.

I guess this is a huge topic but I currently have a ford Focus 2009 1.8 style which I got about 6 months ago. Don't like it, the build quality is rubbish, it's got lots of creaks and rattles, it keeps losing power, and the road noise is worse than my old Fiesta.

So I want to change it. I wondered if anyone had any opinions re similar sized cars. Ideally I want to spend between 10000-11000, and I guess what matters most to me is a car that feels well put together and is quiet!... Read more

The officer invovled and recorded pushing Ian Tomlinson over at the G20 protest has avoided prosecution by the CPS.

The least the MPS can do now is ask that officer to resign. And he should do so as a moral gesture to the Tomlinson family.... Read more

This idea that anyone wants to deny PC Hayward his rights seems to have become a bit of a meme. It's not true, nobody wants to see him denied his rights; we want the family of Ian Tomlinson to have their right to justice. The PM's weren't by themselves inconclusive it's just that two of them came to a different conclusion than the Home Office Pathologist, Dr Patel, who even at the time was under suspicion regarding the quality of his work. The CPS decided this conflict of evidence meant there was no likelihood of a conviction but isn't that a matter for a jury to decide?

The Attorney General has expressed misgivings about the case, this is not just a matter of the great unwashed wanting to see a copper hung out to dry. It's about the police, especially the Met, recovering their trust and credibility. The fact that right wing papers like the Mail and the Telegraph, which once upon a time would've supported the police through thick and thin, are joining in the condemnation of this obvious whitewash should be ringing alarm bells.
