Hi,
My Son has a problem when starting - when he inserts the key and turns to start, all he gets is a red key light on the dash that flash's. If he tries again, sometimes it will start without problems - other times he has to remove the key and try again and it works.... Read more
I was reading an article on the problem of car cloning and how easily chassis number scould be altered and it occured to me that there must be ways to combat this.
One way is obviously to have the number plate and even the VIN number etched on the windows. However, another way would be to have the VIN number applied as a small sticker in an unobtrsive position beneath the laquer coat. Cloners would have to damage this area to change the number. Even better would be to have the VIN number or even a bar code applied beneath the laquer, close to the number plate. If this could be read along with the number plate using an ANPR type system, mismatches between the two would be picked up.... Read more

hi, i have a fiesta 1.4 petrol(2004) and it has developed an a anoying problem, while driving it has an intermitting problem of pulling back as if it was running short of petrol, then it will suddenly shoot forward, somtimes it has got so slow that i have had to pull over wait for a while and restart, i have had it to the garage several times with no joy. so far it has been on the dynostics m/ch no fault found, fuel cleaned out and new fuel filter, renewed core plugs, checked for water leaking onto electrics water-washer ect, new ht leads, air filter, oil and filter, tried leaving fuel filler cap slack as there is a vacume build up, sometimes it does seem to run ok, but when i do get the pulling back fault things i have noticed it does nt matter on the weather dry or wet, seems to happen when fuel is low ie 1st to 2nd mark, i,m starting to wonder if it could be a faulty fuel pump? but i have spent so much now i just want it fixxed. can anyone help ?/ many thanks, alan Read more
We've been with one big insurer for some time - one that started out as a lean, mean concern that undercut the old establishment but that was some time ago and now they are part of the establishment and no longer cheap.
My son is 18 and because we he's added as a named driver, the cost of insurance has been highlighted. Our existing insurer has upped the premium this year compared to last year, when he was 17. We have a full no-claims bonus.... Read more
"Preferred repairer...a cheap job with corners cut" The following happened to me with my claim with" the one with the red telephone on wheels." My car hit in the rear whilst waiting to enter the traffic on a roundabout. Car put on transporter owned by preferred repairer and taken miles away to the next county for repair. After some considerable period it was returned and left on the road outside my house. I did not know the car was being returned that day and nobody was in to inspect the repairs or sign for delivery. What I found was no repairs had been undertaken-the rear panel and bumper were still as the time of the accident. Preferred repairer denied this. Insurance company was happy as job had been signed off.........endless wrangles followed with my word against an unholy alliance of the insurance company and their mates- the repairers. Matters went from bad to worse-with the insurance company eventually siding with me but telling me to issue legal proceedings against the repairer. Months later insurance company offered a settlement on condition files were not sent to the Ombudsman. My verdict is avoid "preferred repairers" at all costs......you have been warned!
I was wondering if anybody had any idea how long it is taking the DVLA to issue new log books. Six weeks ago I got another car and the owner assures me he posted off the log book the following day. He also got another car (again privately) later the same day. Again the logbook was posted the next day. Neither of us has a newlogbook yet. Read more
Just bought a brand new car. First registered on 13th July, V5 arrived through my letterbox on 17th. However for some reason my first names on it have been transposed so I'll see how long it takes for them to send a corrected V5.
I have a jaguar X type Diesel 2L SE (2008). I bought it about 9 months back from authorized dealer and now the clutch is gone and the dealership is saying it driving style and wear and tear and wont honour the warranty Read more
Don't make the same mistake I did when Jaguar dishonoured their warranty. Don't use a lawyer - I was quoted (after running up a bill of £3366.35) a price of +/- £24K to take Jaguar to court. Then one of Honest John's team recommended The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited - phone: 08006920825. I actually dealt with a very knowledgeable and helpful fellow called Partrick Gildea. Explain the problem and he will hold your hand and guide you right through to The Independent Dispute Resolution Service (IDRS). This is a free service, though you do have to pay a small fee - maximum fee is £200 to sue for up to £10K which is refundable if you win. No solicitors, no time in court, minimum hassle and very very fair.
On the subject of the clutch, a friend had the same car as me and had exactly the same clutch trouble as you - it is NOT driving style or wear & tear. It IS a Jaguar fault in that it is a botch using faulty parts. After a lot of fighting with Jaguar, they eventually repaired his clutch under warranty, only for it to go again after only a few weeks: after that they did a proper job using the new and updated parts and fixed the problem. He finally got so sick of the hassle of fighting Jaguar and sold the car at considerable loss and is now driving a BMW....
The ecu light is on the dash (engine symbol) of my 2000 vectra 1.8 16v and it runs pretty badly. I have read all the bumff i can find and believe it is fitted with a Siemens simtec 56.5 ECU with the diagnostics plug under the cover by the handbrake.
I have tried to read the codes and my car does the following which does not entirly concur with what it should do on the topbuzz pages.
I need the engine switched off to be able to read codes with the engine running i get nothing. Shorting pins 5 and 6 gives me the following codes 1515, 0100 and 0110. These 3 sets of number then keep repeating over and over after a pause (they do not repeat 3 times each as topbuzz tells me)
According to my data 1515 is IAC, car idles fine and 0100 is the MAF and 0110 ATS???? Both of these are the same unit i think (black unit downsteam from the airbox) and i have replaced this with no change in running.I have also put additional earth wire from MAF to ground.
The odd thing is that car had been standing for several months and it started fine after a battery charge and ran great for about 12 miles and the the fault re-occured.
Can anyone offer any advice on a cause of my problem.

i have replaced MAF and it was the same, only grounded the earth wire as it should be
Has anyone heard of a Vauxhall Omega 1999 2Litre automatic Station Wagon's computer going faulty? When the car was switched on, apparently without the foot even touching the accelerator, it took off on its own, then did the same thing in reverse.
Does anyone on this site know of such a thing happening to this particular type of car?... Read more
I assume you mean the ECU any automatic will creep forward or backwards if its in gear and if the tickover is not correct it will move quicker. I assume it does not move when its in park or neutral because if it does then you have real problems.

Why not "chip" the car with something like an RFID tag or the kind of chips used for pets. If the chip is embedded in some part of the car that is expensive/difficult to change, it would make it a lot harder to alter the vehicle's identity. All you need is the requisite scanner to read the info.
