From time to time, when I start the car the message "Anti-skid service required" appears together with the warning triangle. both go out when I push the READ button on the left hand stalk. The next time I start the car the message "Anti-skid temporarily off" appears. This time the warning triangle will not go out. However, after driving about 400 yards, both disappear. My local dealer can never find any fault - neither message is displayed by the time the car gets into the workshop. What is the problem? Read more

Hi there, I have just got a GT TDI 130 PD golf and from cold the engine judders until warm! From what I have read, this happens with a few cars and can be fixed by swapping or remapping the ECU. Now before I send money to have it remapped (which I intend on doing any way at some point) I still have my Bora with the 130 PD engine that I have not yet sold. Therefore, I was thinking of swapping the ECU’s over to see if the fault swapped. Can I do this with out needing any special equipment to re-program keys or any thing once the battery has been disconnected? Are their any tips on the best way to do this with out damaging any thing? And where is the ECU located on the cars? Thank you in advance for any help. Read more

How much more beneficial is having All wheel driver as opposed to rear wheel drive. My knowledge of AWD is that is usefl when going off road and not that important when driving around town. Read more

Hi All,

This is with Direct Line.

Got a 1.1 LX W Plate Saxo as a 2nd car for the wife to learn to drive in. I will be the main driver for short runs to work etc. Other car is a SAAB. I am paying an additional £17 pcm for fully comp on the Saxo. 3rd party was only a few quid cheaper!

Adding the wife as a named driver on the Saxo is increasing the premium from £17 to £50 pcm. Not bothered about getting the absolute cheapest, but would apprecaite any views on whether this is a rip off or not?

Regards.

Ok, and thanks for the responses. I think I will just go with it for a few months and see how the driving goes. It'll probably end in divorce anyway!!

how often should cambelt be changed.?

I have received two conflicting answers for this. Either replace after 50,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first. The other answer is 8 years. Can anyone give me more info on this? It was last changed in 2003 and has done 41,000 miles since. ... Read more

Hi guys

Hope you can give me a bit of advice on this one. I am currently driving a Ford Escort 55 1.8D Van and the gear change between 2-3 is crunchy. If i ease the the change it wont crunch - i.e slightly longer than normal to change the gear - which i have got used tpo but if i am giving the car some power and changing the gears fairly quick then i get this crunch. It will occasionally happen from 1 - 2 as well.... Read more

Worn synchro's in the gearbox - assuming the clutch is disengaging properly.

(Old Tommy Cooper joke IIRC...)

Got my second parking fine in ten years this morning. I'd paid the ticket but overstayed by about 20 minutes and "Lovely Rita" had already ticketed me when I returned. We had quite an amiable chat and she showed me how to cancel the fine. I duly punched a button, put a fiver's worth of coins in and the machine printed off two receipts. I folded one round the fine and posted it into a slot on the side of the machine, so it will all be cancelled by the end of the week and my smallcontribution goes into the town's coffers. In this town most people do not overstay and the constant "rotation" of cars is a good way to ensure an incoming driver usually finds a place to park. (Local residents get a special badge for about 40 quid a year.) There's a three hour free slot at lunchtime. Wardens (remember them?) emphatically do NOT get commission. ... Read more
