Vectra started ok then stalled at junction and failed to restart! Checked voltage to heater plugs and the heater plugs themselves found two down so replaced with new! Failed to start again so checked that the injectors were working, they were ok. Rechecked voltage to heater plugs - NO Voltage??. Is the comman rail protected by a relay or fuse? could this have blown? No idea which relay does feed the comman rail or why there should be no voltage found at the heater plugs? Also when ignition is turned on the glowplug indicator light doesnt light up on test? Any ideas? Read more

My car has recently been involved in a majorish accident. After an inspection the repairer has said that 3 of the 4 tyres needed replacing.

Although that's good that I get new tyres I am left with one which is part worn, at 4mil.... Read more

Well the wife took the car out for a drive after passing her test and the upshot was that we found out that the near side suspension spring snapped, luckily near the bottom. Car still drivable (got it back home to Stafford) but now got to get it sorted. How much do you think it should cost ? Am I right in thinking its best to get both done at the same time ?

Thanks... Read more

Similar fault traced to a defective MAF. The car revs were hanging during gear changes and not slowing down. No error codes were logged. Regards Peter

pedal trick is only for engine related faults you will need a code read for the central locking ecu or better still a vehicle wide dtc check only available with tech 2 i believe (there are soooo many ecu's on these and checking in the right one maybe a hit an miss afair unless you use someone who knows vauxhalls), Regards TB

Previously I had a 1.9 JTD 100bhp, 03 reg, from 140K to 170K; recently sold. I loved it but the local garage warned of expensive repairs imminent. Averaged 47 mpg, low 40’s round town in the winter, low 50’s motorway in the summer.

Replaced with 1.9 MJ 105bhp, 56 reg, 3 months ago, with about 27K on the clock - now + 3K. ... Read more

One of the main reasons for diesel economy is the high low speed torque allowing long gearing, if you alter that you are driving more of the time past the engines most efficient speed, so I suspect that the gearing has a lot to do with it. Once you have past the point of maximum torque the efficiency steadily drops off.

I can get 50+ mpg from my Citroen XM estate which weighs about a ton and a half by keeping the revs below 2,000, the Peugeot 2.1 engine it uses will pull down to tickover speed.

We've recently started rennovating. All new chrome. Leather "revitalised". Body resprayed, looking for the best wax to preserve the paint. All advice welcome

You won't go far wrong with Autoglym products (High Gloss?), but I'll assume you want a wax and not a polish as the paint is new. Maybe ask the bodyshop for their advice, or did you spray it yourself.

Sounds like an interesting project - any more info or piccies?

I recently PX'ed my 1999 W202, but one thing I never understood was that, when the oil level was low, it sounded like a bag of spanners when started from cold. But it was much quieter when I topped the oil up.

By "low", I mean below half-way on the dipstick, not below the minimum mark. So there should not have been low pressure, and anyway I never saw the low pressure light come on even at slow idle.... Read more
