Somewhere I recall reading about a cure for this. Did it involve ammonia in a bowl in the car with the system running? Killing the bacteria? Advice please if this rings a bell with anyone. Thanks Read more
This may be no surprise to those who change cars at a greater rate than 1/ 15 years, but I expected a battle when changing the car on a policy with 3 months remaining. I phoned Norwich Union, got through to a very helpful man in sunny Bangalore and it was all done with a refund to my card of about £8 in about 4 minutes. I'm sure that sort of thing used to be associated with a lot of sucking of teeth, and cries of 'it'll cost you!'. Read more
I had a m/bike insured with a well known classic bike company , on a classic policy , at about 6-7 mths the bike was sold ,so I cancelled the policy, it was the type where you did not get a NCB,
no refund was allowed, so on a new bike I went elseware,
last week a cheque arrived , for £25 , + a voucher for £25 off my next policy with them.
I rung them up , and they quoted the company I use at the moment , and offered a premium £65 more than I am paying now.
cashed the cheque and threw the voucher away,
Just had my wheels stolen last night - they obviously had the manufacturer's standard shape locking wheel knut.
I've easilly found after market locking bolts (obviously I don't just want to get the manufacturers ones again as anyone with a BMW knut can remove my wheels again).
I could use 2 or 3 different shape locking bolts to make more difficult to remove.
But can anyone confirm/RECOMMEND LOCKING WHEEL BOLTS THAT ARE UNIQUE i.e. that I'm 100% guaranteed that nobody can just obtain the same ones are be able to remove my wheels?
Many thanks,
Matt. Read more
Locking wheel nuts can be removed without the other part of the the nut/bolt. Tyre change places to it all the time - but they will damage them. I would also think some noise would be involved.

My 2001 Scenic didn't have a belt, it had a chain ( joy)
I know it used the same engine as the smaller Megane...both 1600 cc.

The run out model of the Forester seem to be still around at attractive prices, which one would you go for:
option 1 Forester 2.0l XC auto - sunroof Heated seats 08 reg but 0 miles
option 2 Forester 2.5l turbo all electrics plus performance but higher running costs.
My mileage since retiring is around 8k pa regularly out and about to N Wales the Dales & SW Scotland so security of 4 wd helpful.
Anyone with the 2.5l turbo got real running costs?

I have a 2.0 XT (turbo) auto. I test drove a 2.0 normally aspirated version and found it very hard work. The turbo by contrast is effortless. The new 2.0 non-turbo is now 16 valve and similar to the Honda Vtec engine. Although it is more powerful than the earlier 8 valve engine it has to be worked very hard and is not very satisfactory as an auto. Also, fuel consumption sufffers as a result.
I was recently offered a new, unregistered 2.5 XTen auto with leather and sat nav for £17995 by a main dealer , which is nearly £10k off list! Predictably the trade- in I was offered was derisory so I didn't bother.
The VED issue is probably significant in terms of running costs as post March 2006 cars are £400 per annum and rising whereas pre March 2006 cars are just over £200 and only going up £5 per annum in the new year and a maximum of £30 more in 2010.
I am tempted to look for a low mileage 2006 2.5 XT car with the lower VED.
On the question of mpg the Forester Forum members experience is that the 2.5 XT is, if anything, more economical than the 2.0XT as more usable torque lower down.
I get 26 mpg overall with a lot of short journeys - 32 to 35 mpg on a run - and a worst ever tankful @ 20 mpg with incredibly short journeys in very cold weather with ac on.
Great cars!

Hot on the heels of Suzuki's exit, Subaru are quitting too blaming (no surprise here) the downturn in world-wide sales. Unlike Suzuki they elave an impressive history behind them. Read more

hello all,
well i managed (if anyone remembers my old thread) to get my heating fixed, which i managed to do half myself :D car has yet another niggle. so im driving along 30mph 4th gear and then suddenly goes funny (not hugely) its a bit like its reving and then letting up and then reving again. Its quite odd as it doesn't always do it and if it does it only does it at this speed and gear combo. Possible thoughts are the spark plugs oooooor something in the fuel line. Slight ticking noise as well coming near window screen wipers as well but thats intermittent too. any ideas???
thank you

Try your oxygen sensor. I had one that was fouled with oil (crankcase breather was blocked) and the car stuttered and surged periodically whilst driving. It did it more after its warmed up a bit. it also caused stalling, though mine was a particually bad case, when the stuttering co-incided with coast-down fuel cutting whilst going to idle.
Changed the O2 sensor, which is pink fluffy dice easy to do, and all is fine. Also check your temperature gauge is working ok first.
About £65 from factors.

My employer gave me an old 12-seat minibus to use today as a van. Something niggled, so I checked the DVLA site to see if I was legal.
'If you had entitlement to drive cars prior to 1 January 1997 you can drive a minibus provided you are 21 or over and the minibus has a maximum of 17 seats including the driver's seat and is not being used for hire or reward.
To drive a minibus which has nine or more passenger seats for hire or reward you will normally need passenger carrying vehicle entitlement (PCV).'
I passed my test back in 196?
My licence dates back to 1977. It's a green paper (D33 Rev May/77) variety covering me to drive groups A, D, E.
I wasn't carrying any passengers, but I was being paid. Does that mean I was being hired or rewarded?
What's my legal position? Read more
bathtub tom says use as a van.
Edit: My licence from 1994 has D1 on it.
Are these things of any use at all? Should one be in a crash sufficiently bad to jam the seatbelt and render the windows unopenable, will there be any physical possibility (or need) to find one of these tools, and apply it? It seems to me that they're highly likely to be completely worthless. Read more
