A friend of mine, a very respectable lady with impeccable character, is very upset over being caught twice by mobile cameras going over the limit in areas where it was 30 but intuitively it looks like it should be higher. She couldn't see any signs. Anyway, I had a discussion with someone over how draconian her punishment is and how worried it made her, having 6 points and feeling like a criminal, when uninsured unregistered vehicles just do what they want. This other person just kept saying, "she shouldn't have been speeding." No matter what mitigating circumstances there were and how certain elements of the cases were unfair, all this person could keep saying was "she shouldn't have been speeding." His air of superciliousness and self-satisfied smirk were annoying to say the least. Think of Norris in Corrie or maybe a self-important traffic warden. He really wound me up. He won't do it again though because I killed him. Read more

I drove past a speed camera last week that had been burnt out.
it made me smile.

Maybe it was burnt out due to bananaman's lady friend in his story driving past it several times a day. LOL ;0)

It is an ongoing problem. SFAIK Government policy is to have 5% bio in diesel at some point in the future yet dicussion in the BR seems to suggest that some manufacturers say NO to any biodiesel in the fuel. So Long as the fuel used meets the appropriate BS there shouldn't be an issue but don't bet on it!

My Xtrail looses power when overtaking and towing up hill. I have read previous threads but has anyone a definitive answer. Air and fuel filters have been changed and on test no codes were shown.
Any info appreciated.

Car

Hi had a moment of madness and put 0.94 litres (0.21 gallons) of petrol into my diesel. Then filled up with just under 47 litres of diesel, so under 2% petrol.

Car is running ok and will top up with diesel in another 50 miles time.

Hope everthing will be ok. Read more

This we found amusing. Aldi have a "Stubby Hammer" on sale for £2.91. For use in confined spaces. Might be of use in some engine bays with no space to work.

Not exactly motoring related but a little more light hearted than some of the threads this week:

i have an old penny (cut-down and bent) fastened to the handle of one of my 14mm ring spanners, this slots neatly and tightly into the spanner head when tightening/loosening 13mm bolts/nuts. I've given up buying 13mm spanners because this is the size that the "Fairies" always seem to nick in the night! - and now they've started on the 10mm ones. Soon, my tool kit will consist of one 50mm spanner and hundreds of bent pennies to fashion every usual size.

A council engineer told a jury today he was attacked by the multi-millionaire boss of one of Britain's best-known furniture chains in an "road rage" incident.

Keith Pearce said Lord Kirkham, the founder and chief executive of DFS, pushed his thumbs into his eyes and scratched at his face before punching him a number of times.

Mr Pearce, who works as an engineer for Doncaster council, told Doncaster Crown Court the incident happened as he was driving to work on April 29.

If found guilty Lord Kirkham could be jailed, put on probation or fined .
or a combination of these.

I wonder if he was fined if it would interest free for 4 years with nothing to pay for 12 months! Read more

Can anyone advise me of how i can erradicate an intermittent clunk sound from the front suspension. Other forums suggest replacing the drive shaft bolts with the XC90 ones as they have a rubber gromitt which minimise the vibration/noise. However, my local Volvo dealer argues that this is not the prescribed fix, instead they suggest the removal of the drive shaft and a replacing a washer and installing a new bolt at the cost of £120.

Any advice? Read more

I used to notice something like this at low speeds on my 52 S60 D5 when it was still under warranty. I took out one of my dealers techs to demonstrate and before we'd reached the end of the drive, he'd diagnosed worn anti-roll bar drop links. These were duly replaced and I've not heard it since.

Of course, I can't tell without hearing it that yours is the same problem.

HI

First post here, I am considering spending £3-4k on a automatic estate for driving up and down the motorway with family (3 of us are currently in a 3 door polo, I have not bought a car in a LONG time).

I am looking for something enjoyable and have been considering BMW 3 or 5 series. What should I be looking out for with these models, most in my price range are 2000-2003 reg and have 100,000+ miles on them.

How many miles will they do in total?
Are there serious costs i could be looking at for servicing with this mileage?
Should I buy an extended warranty?
Are the smaller dealers that sell these cars reliable?
Is there much room for negotiation on price?
Should I get and HPI and AA check myself?

Alternatively should i just lease a new car, although this looks complicated!? The other issue is I have little time to test drive anything.

Any comments would be a help!

thanks

6 cylinder is good for 200K as long as they've been serviced regularly but ...

Front wishbones - £500

Discs £500

Aircon £1000

Top end overhaul £1500

Gearbox £2,000

and so on.

I've done 500,000 miles in a 525, 330 and 728 so I know what I'm talking about!

You won't get a warranty over 100,000 miles.

So use your head, not your heart and buy a younger Ford.

I took my car in for an MOT on Tuesday and it needed to have the front brake pads replaced in order to pass. When I took it out for a drive on the Wednesday evening I was careful to be gentle with the new pads, aware that they needed to bed in. However, by the end of a 7 mile journey, the brakes were starting to feel a little spongy, then the pedal travel started to increase and by the time I had parked up the brakes had gone completely. The next day I took it back to the garage (50yd from house) and the brake fluid had gone completely and it seems the brake pipes had corroded and leaked. Is this faillure common or very rare on a car of this age. Could the garage somehow have caused this fault in the MOT? the leak was about half way along the pipes between front and rear. Read more

Replacing with copper pipes will mean they will never corrode.

This gen of Accord has pipes which run down a channel with a plastic cover, but it is not a solid one so you can inspect. Old gen ones had pipes in the sill so affording better protection.

I am really suprised that they have corroded, but greasing them will be a pain in the backside and will have to done quite frequently as the grease will wash away. Why don't you paint them with Rustbullet or POR15 if you really want protection. I wouldn't want to do it in winter and without a ramp though!
