Hi folks,
On the 24th February this year I bought a Ford Sierra and the tax was due to run out on the 30th of April this year. As you do,I got on with my life and never give it a second thought. Of course I did apply for a V5 as the previous owner could not find the original. I can't remember exactly what date it was when I applied for the V5. I have looked on the V5 to see of any indication of the date I applied, the only reference I see is along the 'Document Ref. No.' which is 01 04 08,whether that is a date,I don't know.
Anyway, the other day I received a letter from DVLA headed 'Failure to relicense vehicle'
Now,as I have already another Sierra off the road,I do get and have received a reminder and therefore keep up to date on such matters and have SORNed it. So,had I received a reminder from DVLA,I would have SORNed the recently purchased Sierra. I suspect that DVLA sent the previous owner the reminder whilst my V5 was being printed.
Anyone else experienced a similar incident?
thanks

I once got a 'Failure to relicense vehicle' letter from DVLA, I am certain I never got a reminder so I sent the cheque for, I think £80 they were fining me and declared sorn from the date the original sorn ran out. Two days later I got my cheque back !

I've just had one of those usual Friday evening drives across town to drop son off at Scouts, you know the sort of trip, people using right turn lanes as their personal straight on queue jump lane, the guy turning right across the main road where it says no right turn holding everyone behind up while he waits for a gap in the traffic.

But one thing stood out above all else and really caught my eye.

One of my local filling stations has priced all it's fuel ending in .4p per litre!

Now, I thought it was an unwritten forecourt law that all prices should end .9p and we've discussed on here before the psychology of this, so why the sudden change? Is it to catch the eye by being different to everyone else? Is it to steal a psychological march on the competition by appearing to be genuinely cheaper in these penny concious days? And has anyone else seen similar, or is it just one mad Essex retailer? Read more

For one lovely moment there, I thought this thread title said "XXXX - 4p a litre..."

I was just about to get my coat....

"I've never known an auctioneer to drop the hammer when the car hasn't actually been sold."
Was stood near the rostrum once and the hammer came down. Then a trader approached the auctioneer with a lower bid and this was submitted!

I am considering buying a used 2004 Volkswagen Sharan 1.9TDi SE and commissioned an AA inspection today. The inspector reported that there was only one problem in that he could see oil on the outside of the turbo input pipe.

Can anybody tell me whether this is going to cost a lot of money to fix because I want to make a decision today or tomorrow as to whether to buy this car?

Thanks

I'll assume the oil is at the EGR/anti-shudder valve unit close to the inlet manifold.

Most (but not all) PD engines seem to leak oil a bit there. As Screwloose implies, if it's a minor leak I wouldn't be too bothered. It's worth considering how the oil gets there though - there are only two routes.

The first and more likely is crankcase blowby as the breather pipe is connected to the compressor inlet. The second is leakage from the turbocharger shaft bearing unit. As PD engines have a bit of a reputation for burning oil, I would suggest blowby as the more likely cause.

I was lucky enough to find an AWX engine with no oil leaks at this point. It burns hardly any oil. (35k miles).

Hello M8 ... I live in Truro, sorry to hear about your "mission" I bet you preferred the new A30 to the old bumper to bumper stretch under the iron bridge at Goss Moor !
Well, the wev looks ok (for Cornwall) this week - have a safe return journey and try to avoid Friday & Saturday (changeover days !!)

Worked arranging motor insurance in the early 90's and can remember loads of cars being stolen, as owners could not sell them and it was the only way of getting decent cash for the vehicle.........in theory.

It had occurred to me that this time round this could not happen as immobilisers are so good, bar getting a mate to knock you around in a fake key snatch or a pretend burglary on your house with the car being torched afterwards, not much could be done to fake claims on a wide scale.

But no - HJ news reports that someone has faked his car falling off a cliff (the faking being it was supposed to be accidental) and lots of other dodginess is occurring as people struggle with debt.

Interesting times at insurance company claims depts.

We all pay, as shysters try it on with insurers.
A few local examples:
* More Rayban sunglasses have been paid out for than have ever been imported into South Africa.
* EVERY motorist who has a car break-in in Durban had a leather jacket in the car. For those who don't know, Durban reaches about 30 degrees and humid as a sauna from November to April.
* A friend who is an ex national swimmer and navy diver - now in the insurance business - had a claim for stolen diving equipment, after a diver had his car broken into while he was out in the water.
Said insurance man also insures local sports shop. Got the list of stuff which had been nicked... about three times as much volume as would fit into the car!

Being honest helps - after my last burglary I got paid out within 4 days, with no penalty. That after 10 years of no claims, except for one car window (burglary attempt) where I claimed ONLY for glass, and NOT for non-existent camera, radio, raybans, toolkit, jacket etc etc etc etc etc etc

Recently it's seemed like every week we get a new record high oil price. So this week was looking good, oils prices stable, even falling back a bit and then.....

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7501939.stm

$147

This time it's Irans fault.

last week it was oil speculators. The week before that it was the Saudis not pumping enough.

I wonder who will get the blame next week?

Oil is now down $18/barrel off its peak - local garage has put the price up by 1p per litre compared to last week.

My mate has been complaining recently of the poor response from the brakes of his A6 Avant. It has new pads and disks all round and has had the brakes bled.
I've driven it and it does seem to need considerable effort on the brake pedal, compared to my dads old A4.
I'm wondering if this is the master cylinder or servo problems

Any advice would be appreciated

Apparently theres a lot of travel on the brake pedal after leaving the car overnight which reduces after 4 pumps
