"is it still a bottleneck around Exeter "
Not in my experience - though I usually go down there "out of season". Not peak holiday season yet and M5 "goes round " Exeter these days - gone are the days when 4 or 5 hours were spent getting through Exeter!
By the way, wouldn't it be better to go M6, M42, M5? I know M42 can be bad (worse than Exeter) but clear at the time you will use it - better/shorter than going along M6 to M5 junction which can be awful.
Phil
PS - just down the road from you in Sileby - Barrow's my village

thanks philW, i will take a look at the route you suggest, by the way is that petrol station in barrow still overly expensive ? came second in a poll some while ago only beaten by the petrol station near to an oil refinery in scotland?

can confirm the Exeter bit shouldn't be a problem 3 lanes of m/way and improvements to the lanes for getting on the A30

"that petrol station in Barrow still overly expensive"
Certainly is - 135.9 for diesel for ages! Oddly enough, a couple of months ago it was cheaper than Sainsbury's for a week, and even more oddly every morning I get my paper from there and there are always a good few filling up.
Don't know about you, but everywhere I go away from Loughborough area petrol/diesel is cheaper - even in Snowdonia last week at ordinary petrol stations it was as cheap as Tesco/Sains round here.
Regards
Phil

Depending on what time you need to arrive, allow two to three hours from Exeter to Falmouth. It is a long way! I live in Saltash, Cornwall and I would take 90 minutes minimum to get to Falmouth. Remember, no motorways and a lot of single carriageway A roads.

Sorry about the circumstances in which you are travelling,The M42 s/bound is pretty quiet before 6.30am The M5 takes you straight onto the A30 bypassing Okehampton .
Try to take a coffee/tea break every couple of hours , and as Sally Traffic says on radio 2 " allow plenty of time for your journey".

hi room .. just an update on the journey, everything went well didnt need to stop for any road works or congestion on the trip south, not many caravans on route either, but still the same old plonker lorry drivers trying to overtake one another on the long up hills , I did the maths .... 800miles and used 72 ltrs unleaded @ 118.9 , works out about 45mpg ( daewoo lanos 1.4) with 4 adults and a boot full of camping gear, found a good camp site in blackwater , 6 miles from truro ( 4 person tent) 10 pounds per night ( just the tent not each) i shall be back there next year for definite for 10 days or so thats for sure... cheers zoo

Hello M8 ... I live in Truro, sorry to hear about your "mission" I bet you preferred the new A30 to the old bumper to bumper stretch under the iron bridge at Goss Moor !
Well, the wev looks ok (for Cornwall) this week - have a safe return journey and try to avoid Friday & Saturday (changeover days !!)
