Does anyone have any suggestions for a £10k car for weekend fun? I have a Primera GT that i use for Track days, its huge fun, but at 150bhp, its also less powerful than mine and my wifes daily drivers (320d Msport 163bhp & 330d Touring 231bhp). My Rover 216 race car also falls short on the speed front even though its perfect for a budget championship.
I'd like to get a sports saloon in a few months, and the E39 M5 and C32 AMG Kompressor (both circa 2001) seems to be the best bets.
The M5 appears to have some very expensive inherent issues if you buy a lemon, I havent read so much on the Merc, but it appears to loose nothing in perfomance to the BMW. I'm not bothered about Auto or Manual boxes.
The 3rd option was the Audi RS4/RS6. I haven driven a moddified RS4 2.7T V6 (circa 480bhp) from a colleague in Germany, it was certianly a very quick car, but again, i dont know about long term relibility.
I also like the Monaro 5.7V8, seems alot of car for your money, and a few are starting to break close to £10k now, but i'm worried that the lack of ESP may make it a bit of a handful on wet/greasy roads, and wouldn't feel happy about my wife driving it in those conditions (She is only used to driving a FWD hard on Track days).
Any other ideas, comments or suggestions?

There were rumours that the new Jazz would be available with a diesel engine, is there any truth to this?

Suppose it depends what you use it for - around town there probably wouldn't be much in it.
Mitsubishi's Colt 1.5D does mid 40's urban.
I just pray that the new Jazz has an intermittant rear wiper - the continuous one on Mrs BP's Jazz drives me nuts!
I know its not motoring, but it is green motoring!
I have a new bicycle with 700 x 35 tyres (it says so on the sidwalls). I have fitted a trip computer but need to know either the tyre circumference in millimetres or the size in inches.
I think the circumference is 2200mm which makes a 27.5" tyre. Does that sound right for the sidewall markings?

How about using a bit of 'o' level maths if only to compare results.
From memory circumference = pi (3.1416 or 22/7) X diameter.
The trouble with that method is that cycle tyres commonly come up slightly over or undersize. Everytime I change a front tyre on the bike I need to re-set the computer, the circumference method is the most accurate way to set it up.

Over the last 6 months I seem to be seeing more and more 3 wheeled motobikes, whilst they look like fun,but what is the advantage for the driver, they can't overtake quickly, surely the benefits of being on 2 wheels, I'm sure they are very costly -and why are their drivers able to drive around without helmets Read more
Is the OP refering to trikes, which do not require the rider to wear a helmet, or the Piaggio MP3, whos riders do require a helmet by law. The MP3 & Gilera Fuoco have 2 wheels at the front, which fall inside the spec for the width of a motorcycles wheels, hence the helmet requirement, & can lean into bends etc. at a far greater angle than a conventional 'bike, due to the extreemely complicated suspension system. They can also "lock-up" the suspension when coming to a stop, so the rider needn't put their feet on the deck as the 'bike stays upright, when the throttle is opened to move off, the suspension then reverts back to normal. As for overtaking other traffic, the 500 'bikes are no slouch when speed is needed. For normal riding, they are obviously more stable than any 2 wheeled 'bike & can be thrown around in virtually any road condition. There's also a hand-brake fitted. The Fuoco is a more robust looking 'bike than the MP3, & both are a lot of fun to ride.

must come with a full petrol tank for that then !!
Female friend has just erm... extensively restyled her 206 auto with the help of a hedge.
She's 22 and has an automatic only licence. Budget for a new one is £10k, cash, but low insurance and reasonable fuel economy are priorities as she does a fairly large mileage.
It needs to be a conventional auto, not a semi-automatic even though her licence would allow her to drive one. She's decided that she likes the old SEAT Ibiza - the only problem is that either she is going to get no discount because it'll be the last one in the country, or she won't get one at all.
Assuming that one doesn't come through for her (and never argue with a woman who's made up her mind) what else can she have, brand new, within budget? She's not a girl racer but defintiely no blokes' or old people's cars allowed, even though the classic buyer of a small automatic is a pensioner couple!
I have my suggestions of course but I'm hoping I'm not missing anything by suggesting that the closest she can get is a Polo Match 1.4 SE - £9,500 through drivethedeal/dealdrivers. Read more

"Isn't the MMT one of those automated clutch cars that turn out to involve a lot of effort to drive?"
It is indeed and how anyone could describe the drive as anything other than diabolical I'll never know!
Manufacturers have strange way of looking at this UK VED/Co2 thing. If a potential buyer is prepared to pay an extra £1000 for a auto box then an extra £90 per year VED isn't going to put 'em off!
This buyer for one isn't going to pay extra for a bucking bronco no matter how much the sales team have been taught to drive 'em slowly when moving off.

boxsterboy, thats very true, and I have considered both the Elise, and older Elan 1.6 Turbo as both are light enough for my trailer so I could take to track days further afield, however, I want something that will also cruise the motorways/Autobahns in comfort as I make 5-6 trips a year to Germany to see relatives, and an Elise just doesn't appeal there.
I guess my criteria includes a big 6 / 8 cylinder engine with over 300bhp too :-)
