I am considering a Subaru Forester as my next car. Today I went past a dealer that had a number of Subarus advertised. The cars were in different parts of the forecourt not because of price but because, according to the salesman, the Legacy/Outback is an AWD and the Forester is a 4x4! To me the Forester is a a slightly taller variation of the Legacy/Outback theme and of interest to be because of the increased headroom. I do not see it as a 4x4 as in my mind these are the true off roaders. Is there any clear definition or is it in the eye of the beholder? Read more

Mum & Dad have a Pug 406 1.8 manual with about 50k miles on. It has had no issues whatsoever apart from the odd parking dent, and it's coming up to a timing belt change which is a few hundred quid. The Pug dealer has helpfully suggested that this might be a good time to replace the car and my folks are now considering what to do. It is a 2001 model. The question is, while all cars are different and there are no guarantees, what is the reasonable longevity of these cars - it has mainly been driven round town so I'm thinking clutch wear for starts. They do not drive with any vigour whatsoever so it has had a gentle life. their average miles are about 8000 a year so no diesels

---

The other part of the question is, for around the £14k-£17k mark, what can they get that is:
* New
* Reliable
* Has fully adjustable & heated seats
* Focus-size or similar (not an exec)
* Petrol & economical

It would help if you could answer Screwloose's previous questions on the same topic.

I think my Camshaft Cover Gasket is leaking.

My Haynes manual describes removing the camshaft cover in the section on replacing the Timing Belts.
It says you need to remove the spark plug cover, then unscrew the 20 securing bolts to remove the camshaft cover.

The camshaft cover seems to slot slightly under the timing belt cover.

Can I remove the Camshaft Cover without removing the Timing Belt Cover ??

I'm considering travelling up to Docklands to attend Motor Show 2008. I was quite impressed with the 2006 show, although in the summer heat, the air con/ventilation was struggling badly.

Reviewing the list of exhibitors on the official site, there appear to be a few notable absences. For example:

BMW (they had a large outdoor stand in 2006, but I believe had previously not got involved at the NEC).
VAG
Volvo

Does anyone know whether the website is simply out of date, or are the above genuine 'no shows'?

I ask because, perhaps unusually, I've no particular interest in gawping at supercars. I use the events to have a good look at vehicles I might one day think about purchasing.

Fair point about the economy.

according the lads at hyundai i know, the mpg on the motorway is fine, its the around town.

still thinking about it - ive had such a good reliability experience with hyundai, i rate them as good as the fiat/citreon/renault alteratives.

There is a large stretch of the A13 from Dagenham to Docklands which has 3 lanes but is a ridiculous 40mph limit. Any idea why? ( I mean the area is so ghastly that you want to speed through it to wipe the memory of it ).

And, another thing, going the other way from Dagenham towards Thurrock there is a 40mph limit with a speed camera about 20yds before it becomes a 50mph limit. What is the point of that? other than to catch people toeing it when they see the 50 roundel. Read more

Hello sheav. I see you've just today registered with the 'backroom' ...so welcome. Why, though, I wonder, is your very first post one telling us that you go through a 40mph camera at 55 every night - given that tonight/tomorrow or next week it could be functional....and following on from that, have you found out that some or all of the other cameras on that stretch - or indeed any other camersa you pass through, are working. How have you gathered this information in the first place - coz most people wouldn't deliberately risk points and fines by ""trying out" cameras to see if they get a ticket?

Was driving SWMBO's Modus yesterday and experienced what I can only think is clutch slip.

Car accelerates from stop fine and seems to drive normally, however when in 4th or 5th and applying the accelerator the engine speed seems to rise faster then the speed of the car does for a period.

Question(s):-

. Is this clutch slip?

. Could it be a poorly adjusted clutch (e.g. it's not been released fully when the foot is off the pedal)?

. Does this car have a DMF and is this an early sign of it's impending failure?

Car is only 3.5 years old and with just under 30k on the clock. Read more

Certainly sounds like clutch slip; not sure if they have a DMF? Not typical DMF symptoms anyway.

What happens when you just rest your foot on the pedal? More slip? An abrupt jerk when you remove it?

So if I?ve read the press right, the prices of some cars are falling like a stone? Maybe larger petrol cars for example. If owners of these cars have purchased them on PCP?s 12-18 months ago when things were looking rosy, when the PCP ends and the dealer has to honour the future guaranteed value, what will this mean for us all? Are some car finance houses going to be stung? Just pondering. Read more

I'm monitoring Boxster prices with morbid trepedation and they are in freefall.

I'm just glad I paid auction prices, and wayyy below trade book too for mine last year. £13k for a 2001 Boxster S. Now if only it was 19 days older the tax would be so much cheaper.
