There is a large stretch of the A13 from Dagenham to Docklands which has 3 lanes but is a ridiculous 40mph limit. Any idea why? ( I mean the area is so ghastly that you want to speed through it to wipe the memory of it ).
And, another thing, going the other way from Dagenham towards Thurrock there is a 40mph limit with a speed camera about 20yds before it becomes a 50mph limit. What is the point of that? other than to catch people toeing it when they see the 50 roundel.

I don't know the road but a quick look at Google maps shows an urban road passing through what looks like mixed residential and commercial land. Lots of side roads leading to folk's houses as well as junctions with major roads. 40 is for safety of non vehicular users.
And yes the camera is there for the reason you think it is - fifty starts after you pass the roundel not when you see it.

Hard to believe 'they' would do you for busting 40mph if it's literally 20yds from the end of the limit - maybe it's set in relation to the 50? Be interesting to know - volunteers?

Now thats Naivety :)

They've raised the speed limit then!
When I lived up there the stretch between Barking and East Ham was set at a ridiculouse 30mph, straight dual carriageway with only a sliproad from the A406 joining it and no houses.
Barking & Dagenham councils, along with their neighbours in Newham have always had a strong ant-car policy, taking every opportunity they can to obstruct progress by lowering limits, putting up speed humps and pinch points and fitting traffic lights with obstructive timing sequences.

Yes, but I'm not quite naive enough to be the volunteer ;-)

....the speed camera is in the 40mph zone, absolutely. With the 50 speed limit just yards away (so.....in effect just seconds) Interestingly, it is just after a flyover when people may be just nudging over the 40mph. I have a speed limiter on my car which I use religiously (after getting three points earlier in the year) and on the downhill, you have to brake to prevent exceeding the limit.
|
"on the downhill, you have to brake to prevent exceeding the limit."
There's probably a response to that statement involving something about "selection of the correct gear"...
|
Brake or use your gears.....doesn't matter. The point I was making was that the speed camera is shortly after the end of a downward gradient. So, if you were sticking to the limit prior to the end of the flyover, you would have to do something to avoid going over the limit at that point where the camera is. It just seems daft to me to have the camera there in the first place.
|
Only if speed limits don't apply when you're going downhill.
|
|
So if you were sticking to the limit prior to the end of the flyover you would have to >>do something to avoid going over the limit at that point where the camera is.
If you're the driver you have to do something to keep to the speed limit (or face the consequences). Ease off the gas, possibly drop a gear, brake?

this last camera on the a13 dosent work anyway i go 55 through it every night when i come home from work

Hello sheav. I see you've just today registered with the 'backroom' ...so welcome. Why, though, I wonder, is your very first post one telling us that you go through a 40mph camera at 55 every night - given that tonight/tomorrow or next week it could be functional....and following on from that, have you found out that some or all of the other cameras on that stretch - or indeed any other camersa you pass through, are working. How have you gathered this information in the first place - coz most people wouldn't deliberately risk points and fines by ""trying out" cameras to see if they get a ticket?

In the Village of Barton near me either heading towards from the A1 Junction or heading towards it out of the Village the 30 Limit (coming in) or the NSL (coming out) the signs are set a quite of way out of the village, and as it a long road people coming out often speed up before the sings BUT the police sometime wait around that area and i have seen people pulled over for doing that
I saw a police officer pointing out to somewhen where the sign was in relation to the car, so they take it very serously it seems.
