The electrical cables in the engine bay are in ridged flexible plastic conduits and these are taped with that old type of electrical tape at the joints.

I would like to seal these in some way, to avoid the ends unravelling, for example before any oil contamination. What with? I thought of brushing on a coat of marine grade varnish, but don`t want it to let go and unravel as it soaks in.

Never used liquid tape, but have used instant gasket. Same thing I suspect.

I seem to remember a test in maxpower ( I was young!!) when they tested aftermarket filters on a nova (of course!) and the best power increase was to drill some more holes into the original filter housing.

Remember a few years ago when abandoning a car was the most cost-effective way to dispose of it? Some streets in London were favourite dumping grounds IIRC.

Has the high value of scrap reduced that problem? Are those streets now tidier?

On a similar theme last time I visited an auction the cheapest car was £25 for a Sierra with 2 months MOT. What's the cheapest any of you auction regulars see now? Read more

Seen yesterday, old car parked up just off an M1 roundabout. `Scrap cars wanted` on the side and a mobile phone number. Never seen that before.

"Rocketing prices at the fuel pumps could lead motorists to vote out the Government, a poll claims today.

Two-thirds of 18,500 AA members surveyed said they would vote for a different government should petrol prices rise to between 125p and 149p a litre."

Firstly, lets all hope that fuel prices continue to rise :)

Secondly, as much as I dislike the current government, I don't see how they can be blamed for the price of oil/fuel.

to there is largely due to a general drop in moral standards and is not
the fault of the government.

But surely the government are at the very least partly to blame for the drop in moral standards? They are the ones in control of the factors that influence society - schools, law and order, benefits, etc.

I dont blame them for the recent rises in fuel prices, but I do hold them responsible for the declines we have seen over the last 10years. Maybe if they hadn't sold off all the national assests we would have something in reserve for the hard times ahead.

If people are un-happy now what will it be like in 6 months time? plently more bad news on the way - housing market continues to weaken, oil price is still high, gas and electric set to rise, extra 2p a litre tax, etc

Also in France someone had dumped a reasonable three-piece suite at the side of the
road-it was in an area where the council collected from-saw a small car there and
a husband and wife trying to tie the sofa onto the roof of their car-I
went past a couple of hours later and the whole suite was gone.

What's wrong with that? I rescued a nice 30s suite in Carmarthen a few years ago, put out for the dustmen. The sofa went in the back, the two chairs on the roof rack. That's what Volvo estates are for.

Did any body else see this on M40 yesterday.
It looked exactly like current new Mondeo but I wondered if I was seeing things.
It was certainly FAR wider than Escort/focus.

Hi,

Sadly, quite like this 1980 weird looking Chris Humberstone design - the convertible not the estate version.

Does anyone know if it still exists or any other info on it?

Pictures of it here: www.pestalozzi.net/sb/rapport/rapport_gallery.html

STOLEN CAR FOUND IN LIVING ROOM
Tracker recovery crews and police found a new hiding place for stolen vehicles, when they discovered a hijacked car inside what appeared to be the living room of a house in Spruitview, Germiston, Tracker spokesman Gareth Crocker said on Tuesday.
He said a stolen bakkie (pickup truck) was tracked to the house on Monday, but when police inspected the house they also found a second vehicle parked inside what appeared to be a fake living room.
"From the outside, the living room appears to be part of the front of the house and seems totally normal, complete with modern windows and curtains. But inside the entire wall is built on a hinge mechanism which is able to wing open, like a large barn door, allowing vehicles to be driven inside," Crocker said.
The vehicle, a Toyota RunX, had been linked to a recent hijacking case in Germiston.
"Over the years we've recovered vehicles from a number of weird places... parked in holes underground, next to large electrical generators, wrapped in tin foil, painted in tribal muti and even one case last year where the vehicle was being stripped in the back of a moving truck.
"However, a fake living room with a wall on a hinge, is a first for us," Crocker said.

Perhaps a totally convincing mock up of a Luxo-barge would be useful here, where we have tool thefts
You would press the plip, it would hinge in the middle and the lawnmower, tools and workbench would be exposed. The fake-but-anatomically-correct-badge may attempt to Lord it over the lawnmower, but you could threaten it with the Briggs and Stratton`s moniker if it started to bang its drum or make snorting noises at passing Prolo-crates.

Whilst sat in a queue northbound on the M5 last time I was south of Bristol I started thinking..

Is there anything to stop me taking the M49 from the M5 and turning right to Join the M4 to take me back to the M5? Read more

jacks

No problem to divert via M49 -M4 eastbound - rejoin M5(at Almondsbury interchange).

As a "local" living just north of the M5/M4 Almondsbury interchange we use this all the time both north and south bound. The M49 is always quiet.

As a rule of thumb locals NEVER venture onto the M5 between J15 and J18 if any of the following conditions apply!

* From 3pm on Friday evening or saturday morning on a bank holiday w/e (southbound)
* Any Friday or Saturday during school holidays (southbound)
*Any Saturday of Sunday during school holidays or B/H Monday evening (northbound)
* Any Sunday morning when it is raining - 2-3 mile queues to enter the (undercover) Cribbs Causeway shopping mall not uncommon! (north or southbound)

It's particularly useful southbound as traffic queues- at above times- can tail back a couple of miles from the M5/M4 interchange but the overhead signs start designating lane 1 for M4 London/M4 S.Wales well back and you can zip past the caravans on the inside onto the M4 west - M49 and back on to the M5 at Avonmouth J18.
