M5 Diversion - ijws15
Whilst sat in a queue northbound on the M5 last time I was south of Bristol I started thinking..

Is there anything to stop me taking the M49 from the M5 and turning right to Join the M4 to take me back to the M5?

Nothing at all, however its a long way around, plus you then have to navigate your way arounf the Almondsbury interchange which is often where the hold up has stemed from

Thanks for that, I am used to issues around Cribbs Causeway and did not want to try it and find myself committed to a trip to Wales.

No problem to divert via M49 -M4 eastbound - rejoin M5(at Almondsbury interchange).

As a "local" living just north of the M5/M4 Almondsbury interchange we use this all the time both north and south bound. The M49 is always quiet.

As a rule of thumb locals NEVER venture onto the M5 between J15 and J18 if any of the following conditions apply!

* From 3pm on Friday evening or saturday morning on a bank holiday w/e (southbound)
* Any Friday or Saturday during school holidays (southbound)
*Any Saturday of Sunday during school holidays or B/H Monday evening (northbound)
* Any Sunday morning when it is raining - 2-3 mile queues to enter the (undercover) Cribbs Causeway shopping mall not uncommon! (north or southbound)

It's particularly useful southbound as traffic queues- at above times- can tail back a couple of miles from the M5/M4 interchange but the overhead signs start designating lane 1 for M4 London/M4 S.Wales well back and you can zip past the caravans on the inside onto the M4 west - M49 and back on to the M5 at Avonmouth J18.
