Girlfriend has just traded my Rover 75 in for a 53plate MINI Cooper as I am getting an A4 soon.
Was really pleased that I got the same trade in as I bought the car for 2 years ago, especially as it has starting issues that has been put down to fuel pump and ECU!!!
Anyway is there anything specific I should be keeping an eye out for in terms of problems and what is the best way to ensure it lasts for quite some time. Currently done 44K and BMW are looking after the servicing free until either 2011 or 80,000 miles.
Must admit I have never been impressed with them, however after 5 minutes of driving one I think I wanted her to get it more than she did. Its BRG with white roof and stripes and looks pretty good - got a few plans for it, spot lights, roof decal etc!!

Hi Guys,
I'm considering buying a vehicle from a Belfast-based seller, and was wondering if NI is treated any differently from the rest of the UK - as far as vehicle registration goes, anyway (!).
Are there any tax/duty implications, and can the 'odd' plates be swapped for more standard ones?
Thanks. Read more
The odd plates you mention disguise the age of the vehicle and can be worth more on the mainland. They can be swopped for your standard plate if you wish.
Need a Q-Car for my job. Don't ask but its legitimate and government,, Any ideas? Thanks Read more

Hi everyone :). My dad has a 2002 Ford focus 1.6 Ghia, and the fan is ALWAYS on. We are a bit worried about this but the Ford garage cant find anything wrong. Does anybody know what could be causing this problem?. Many thanks :) Read more
If it's like the Mondeo it the fans will run at low speed whenever the aircon is on and speed up if required by high demand for cool air or high engine temp. A resistor in the rad shroud controls the fans speed, if this fails and the aircon is on the fans cycle fast, off, fast, off, if there is a short in the resistor circuit the fans run at high speed constantly.
Not sure about Focus though.

does anyone know if I can use biodiesel?
-=danny=- Read more
I would probably suggest trying it in small ratios to begin with. As the previous poster said that it runs fine on Rix & French biodiesel, it has to be remembered that that is 5% Bio and 95% diesel. My father in law has a Xsara Picasso HDI and he's running fine on a 50/50 mix, and I would suggest that that is as high as you want to go but start at 90/10 and work your way up.

I have been having problems when i start up my mondeo. On start up when i depress the accelorator the revs go down and the engine loses power till it warms up and then it gets better. It can take up to 10 minutes before i am able to drive away. When i am driving the car seems kangaroo at any speed. I have changed leads, coil pack, plugs disconnected the egr valve and blocked hoses and the the fuel pressure valve. Nothing seems to work. I've just been told it's got a fault code 372 and the problem is with the exhaust pressure tranducer. Does anybody know what the code means and where the transducer is. Thanks Read more
Low mileage Honda in the ads.
I phoned and asked for more details of the car for sale.
Pause, silence..................what car?
The car you are advertising!
The red Honda was his reply - I said no it is not a red car in the advert...........
A trader pretending tp be a Private Seller!!
Tip
When phoning do as I did and ask about the car - not the make/colour or anything - if he/she is a Private Seller there is no problem, if he/she is a trader with more cars for sale they are caught out. Read more
>>among the stories I've been told when the sellers name is not on the V5
Last week I sold my Mother-in-Law's Fiesta. It was not registered in my name, neither was it at the V5 address, but I was happy to let them telephone her if they wanted to check any facts. Never happened as I had full documentation from original invoice, price list, brochure, all sevice records, all MOT's, key tags, spare keys, radio code, etc. It was 12 years old, one owner and only 31K on the clock. Sold it to the first person to see it, but could have sold it probably 25 times over.
It was a genuine private sale and the buyer could see this. From the moment I spoke to them on the telephone I made them aware I was selling the car on behalf of my MOL and this did not matter to them. They never even asked to see the V5 until they had agreed to buy it. The young lady in her mid 20's who bought it came with her boyfriend and father. The father said if she did not buy it then he would for his wife as the car was exactly as described in excellent condition.
A friend of mine bought a fairly recent Jag from Autotrader after the owner had died. It was his wife who was finally selling it some 6 months later (but it could have easily been another relative as she could not drive). It had been parked under a tree and was not even washed when he saw it, so he could only guess at the condition of the paintwork. He made a low offer which was accepted, and once he had washed and polished it he realised what a bargain he had bought. She would have made £3 to 4,000 pounds more if someone had washed it and sold it for her. My friend kept it for a few months and then sold it on at a profit.
Yes there are plenty of traders claiming to be private sellers, but you can easily spot them. There may be a genuine reason why the V5 and address do to tally, an elderly person has died or giving up driving, or they cannot be bothered to sell it themselves (as in my case).

I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say.
Our 18 year old daughter had an accident yesterday whereby she crashed into a bollard on a bridge, causing extensive damage to the car which there is little doubt would be written off by the insurance company. No other vehicle was involved but the police were called and one of the occupants of the car was taken to hospital with what is hopefully only minor whiplash.
The car was returned to our local garage on a breakdown lorry.
My fully comprehensive insurance premium was in the region of £725, with my husband and daughter as named drivers. Obviously if we claim on the insurance we will lose at least 2 years of my 4 years? no claims bonus and our premiums will presumably go through the roof given that our daughter was at fault.
So we are now considering the options open to us. We are 99% certain that the insurance company would write off the car and we would estimate that they might offer us in the region of £800 to £1000 at best. Given that the excess for our daughter as an inexperienced driver is £475, the most we could hope to get therefore would be about £500 so we are wondering whether a better option would be to simply scrap the car rather than claim on the insurance.
If we chose this option, are we obliged to tell the insurance company about the accident, given that no other vehicle was involved? Is the police report made available to the insurance company in any way?
Could we simply either keep the insurance open until we bought another car and then change the details, or would the insurance company find out that the car had been scrapped? We are considering not replacing it immediately though so alternatively we could presumably simply cancel the insurance and start afresh if and when we bought a replacement.
We don?t want to do anything illegal but equally we want to take the most cost-effective option.
We would need to bear in mind the possibility of a claim being made by the local authority regarding damage to the bridge, although none was apparent at the time. We will also naturally be checking the situation with regard to the whiplash injury sustained by our daughter?s friend.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Oggie: We've just reported the accident to Norwich Union - they have said that if we don't claim, then given that there was no other vehicle involved, they wouldn't put up the premium. This seems a bit too good to be true ...
It certainly doesn't seem in keeping with the usual insurer's instruction to leave them handle any situation where there may be a claim on a comprehensive policy.
If you have a letter from Norwich Union to that effect, great. If you were told that over the phone, note the name of the person who told you - and as close to the exact words as you can remember - straight away and write to NU asking for confirmation in writing.
Were the underwriter to miss the fact that no claim was made when reassessing your premium for 2007, you'd be in a much better position to argue your case if you have a written commitment from NU.
Here's a seemingly simple question, but one that I'm struggling to find an answer for.
I have recently bought an BMW 530D Sport (E39) advertised with the preferred and desirable FBMWSH. On closer inspection to the service book the last two services (20K miles apart) are Oil Services, surely this is incorrect?
The service book indicates that services performed so far are:
PDI
Oil Service 21K
Inspection I 42K
Oil Service 59K
Oil Service 79k
Shouldn't the last Oil Service be an Inspection II?
Both the car trader I bought the car off and the BMW dealer who serviced it confirm that an Oil Service was requested and performed - but should it have been done without question and does this mean the car that I bought does indeed have a FBMWSH or not?
What I need to find is a document, preferably from a BMW source, that dictates the servicing sequence that (I believe) my car should have received.
Many, many thanks in advance,

My MB flipped from A to B service a few days before I took it in for its first service. It was done while I waited and they pointed out it was requested a B service but where happy to only do an A.

its as right as could be as far as i can see. the only pulley tats really moved is the power steering pump. and that only bolts on in one position. as far as being routed wrong i cant figure out any other way it could go on.its a teaser for sure
