Having had my vectra 1,8 for 4 years know and having giving me little problems, until now. I was wondering if anyone could help me?
The car does not idle properly and tries to stall somtimes, then idles too high sometimes. The engine mangement light comes on then goes off when it feels like it.
Today when i stopped and let the car idle,it idled fine until i put the air con on, then it idled fast. When i turned the air con off again it went back to normal?????
This week i have cleaned the carb,by removing the air filter and spraying carb cleaner in it.
I have changed the exhaust valve, still no change...........................Any ideas?

Try looking at the CBC section....
"If idle speed of 1.6. 1.8 or 2.0 petrol engine is 1200 - 2000 rpm the problem is the idle adjustor control valve (Air Intake Control Valve). Needs cleaning with fuel system cleaner but if that doesn't work it needs replacing at £113 + VAT and modifying by fitting an oil separator. Tends to happen at 60-70k miles."
Your car doesn't have a carb. And the air-con always changes the engine-tone slightly, due to the extra load on the engine. I'm not sure what you mean by the exhaust valve - perhaps the EGR valve?
My mum's old Vectra had the same problem - had to go back to a Vauxhall dealer and have the oil separator fitted, and it cost rather a lot of money - unfortunately this is probably the only way the problem will be cured - it'll eventually come back if you simply replace the idle-control valve.
Probably a silly question, but I have seen several references to these lately but I still don't know what the difference is between a fly-off handbrake and a standard one. Anyone able to enlighten me? Read more
Triumph Spitfires & GT6 from the 1960's had fly-off handbrakes.

I have seen this car on ebay, roughly how much do you think its worth? Read more
I agree, the car doesn't look at all cared for, and you've even admitted in the ad that one scratch has been there from when the car was almost new.
I'd take the £9300 and run if I were you......
hi i have a pug 306 1.9td on a t plate (about '99) recently when driving i have noticed that the wheels make a squeaking noise especially when going over a speed hump or going over a pothole the noise does not seem to be comming from the wheels but further up i'm thinking it could be a prob in the supension / shock absorbers?, knowing next to nothing about cars i would appreciate any help with what the problem could be and if possible any solutions. thank you in advance for your help / suggestions. Hello,
I have a 1995 VW Passat estate.
In the past I bought a pair of plastic headlight protectors that clip over the lamps.
One of them has broken.
I want a replacement, but VW no longer supplies them for this year.
Has anyone got any suggestions on a supplier?
They are a lot cheaper than replacing the glass headlights.
Thanks for your help.

In the never again jobs thread the other day, BBD complained about having to inflate tyres and I agreed, suggesting we could do with solid ones.
Michelin got there first. Today a friend sent me this

Hi,
Just wondering how long a factory fitted clutch would last, not sure whether mine is ready yet. Currently on 120,000.
Heard stories of ones going early - sub 100000 miles and saw a post today on HJ with one doing well with 250k on clock.
And how do you tell if a clutch is getting a bit worn?
Any experinces would be great
Thanks Read more
"Sorry to veer from the proper thread subject. If the word "clutch" hadn't been there we could have nattered on about life insurance instead!"
That was my fault entirely. Any chance of a play on words is like a red rag to a bull for me! - also a chance to reminisce about a fine old car. I still remember when I was about 11 the school doctor arriving in his Vanguard, and the headmaster turning a Latin lesson into a very interesting session on Roman battle formation.
I think that as long as we keep it motoring-related the moderators are fairly tolerant of this sort of thing. Anyway the original question was well answered by others so why not!
I am planning to do Leeds and back in day early next month, for a lunch time meeting, easily do-able, about 480 miles return, which way would you guys recommend?
M5 > M42 > A42 > M1
.. or ..
M5 > M6 > M62
?
I have also looked into flights, Air Southwest do a Bristol to Leeds-Bradford service, it would cost me about £135 return plus parking at Bristol airport, anyone used this service?
And trains, Weston-Super-Mare or Yatton to Leeds about 4 hours each way with one change at Bristol Temple Meads ( I would go from Bristol TM but for parking probs) with Virgin Trains, cost about £85, again any experiences with Virgin Trains on this line? The first train of the morning would get me into Leeds at 12:02 so does not allow much time for delays.
Thanks. Read more
Leeds and back today, 476 miles at an average of 62mph and 52 mpg (the trip comp says 53.8mpg), only a 5 min hold up on the M42 this morning.
No trucks in the outside lane of the A42 for a few miles is a good idea, should be done on the A303, the A30, the A38 ..........
Thanks for the advice.
My Micra has the original manufacturers battery in which is now over six years old. One of the terminals is covered in white battery acid powder, I keep wiping it clean but it just returns. Is this a sign that I am needing a new battery? Apart from this there are no problems with it. Read more
if the OP follows MW"s advice just be warned that you need to disconect the battery terminals before the clamp as these have a habit of spinning round and shorting as you undo them on micra"s
