Predictably I suggest a Legacy 3.0R Spec B saloon. There are no badges other than 'Legacy' on the back and apart from the 18'' wheels looks the same as a 2 litre. No spoilers or fancy bits. Totally anonymous but goes like a scalded cat. It is quicker than the 0-60 suggests (6.5 secs) as the rev limiter only allows 5000rpm from a standstill but normally redlines at 7000rpm.

Local government - observation on housing estates etc More 006 and a half than 007!
My favourite to date is the Mondeo V6 in dirty white, steel wheels and no wheel trims, have about £1500 and a Szuki Vitara to spend. Thanks!

Below the radar even of people who look at Q-cars...
1. Looks exactly like a minicab;
2. Even the alloy wheels look like steel trims;
3. 210 (count 'em) bhp with a possibility of 30 mpg if you're not caning it;
4. Dirt cheap because of zero image;
5. You'll probably get leather, climate and maybe even satnav as standard.
Peugeot 406 V6 saloon.

I mean - look at it. Does it look even vaguely capable of 0-60 in under 8 seconds? This one's even in poverty spec solid green although it might actually have the 194 bhp V6, not the 210 as it's a changeover model.

Wow! Exactly right. thanks

Actually no, the 210 bhp engine only came in about a month after this one was registered although, with Coventry plates on it, it's quite likely to be ex-Peugeot and therefore could be earlier (e.g., my Coventry-registered Peugeot wasn't on sale for two weeks after its first registration.)

If it's a Q car - with some power, you want, judging by the fleet of The National Crime Squad & Mazda 6 2.3 Sport, wouldn't go far wrong.
But if it was a TRUE covert vehicle, wanted, some of the vans we've sold range from full liveried British Gas LDV's, to 'biulders'Transits to Maestros fully insulated inside.
But the best was an Astramax, originally Royal Mail owned, but purchased by DSSS & placed on secondment in the North East. It had blanked out windows in the rear, but had an 18'' hole cut in the loads pace roof to put camera & recording monitors through - how this was not noticed I'll never know!!
& we even had loads of documentation files, regarding it's operational duties left inside it, when we bought it!!

Valid point re vans. I once had a drive in a Renault 5 van - the one with the big cube on the back. The original diesel engine had blown up and the owner was scrapping a Renault 21 with a 1721 cc 100+ bhp engine and he transferred the engine. It flew and was very popular until it was written off. I suppose an Astramax with an SRi engine would be a good covert vehicle.

Why do you need something with highish performance - you're not seriously going to get involved in high speed pursuits are you?
In fact you're surely not even allowed to even exceed any speed limit?

if youve ever been caught out on a stake out you would know how important a fast vehicle is if you are inconvenianced ;-)

a white mondeo with no trims will look like the Old Bill.........steer clear of Vauxhall for the same reason...
anything Japanese, petrol for quietness, must have comfy seats if you're sat in it for ages at a time, air con a must for the summer, electric door mirrors ( so you can move them about easily without moving in the car)
are you going to be hiding in the boot? or is this going a bit too far?

So this is a Q-Car for the "housing estates". From what I've seen of the Police, Camera, Action type footage an untaxed Metro or Astra on Kuhmo tyres will pretty well outrun anything!

I invite the cynics among you to spend an evening with me -especially in a clapped out metro with bad tyres. Bought a 1994 VW Vento VR6 in dark blue for £1200. Will do the job just fine when de alloyed and with a coating of dirt. Those of you who offered contstructive advice thanks.

Sounds ideal. And quick. Incidentally the 406 I suggested sold at under a grand.

There should still be a few reasonable Peugeot 205 GTi's around. Slightly tatty and unwashed in white or gunmetal would be best - nimble for dodging through traffic too.

I agree with barchettaman, the Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 in saloon or estate. The estates don't look at all unusual, so are discreet. Remove the two small VR-4 badges and it's very much a Q-Car. I think around 260 or 280 bhp, 4WD, ASC, AYC, 5 speed auto or manual makes it fairly nippy going A to B. In the UK, especially, hardly anyone knows what they are, so it's easy to keep a low profile as long as you stay away from the loud pedal.

Rover 420 GSi Turbo (debadged) and a nice holiday.

200 bhp, pips 7 seconds to 60 and you'd lose it in a car park.
