Until 2005, I had been a Volvo owner for 10 years. It was apparent that the service history of my vehicles could be accessed by any dealer through a computer system - even back in the mid-90s.

In 2005 I switched to a Honda Accord. In trying (and failing) to get Honda to answer a simple query today, I have established that only the dealer carrying out the service has access to the relevant service record - there is no central database. This has been confirmed by two unrelated Honda outlets and Honda head office.

Unfortunately, the Honda franchise I purchased the car from in 2005 is no longer trading, so the only record of my 2005 service is a stamp in a book - a book which I cannot presently locate, but that's my problem.

Should I be amazed by this non-sharing of information, or were Volvo always an exception to the rule? Read more

I was just wondering if anybody could offer me any help. I have a 00 Seat Leon. I have just noticed a considerable amount of water that has leaked into the car. It stretches from under the carpet of the front left passenger?s seat to the back seat. The door seals seem ok and the sunroofs not leaking. I can?t find any other place the water?s getting in. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

after you have drilled the centre of the barrel out you need to turn with a large screwdriver the ignition bit to what was position 2 before you can push the pin in.
Be aware that when you put new lock in there will be swarf that will have gotten into the steering lock mechanism this really wants wiping out or will cause sticking problems, also be careful how you put the new barrel in .

Can I fit a US audio head unit to my car? What are the potential problems/incompatibilities etc.

I assume they are the same size (DIN), same connectors etc, any differences?

The reason I ask is that I am very tempted by a new Alpine unit tinyurl.com/rajnh which is available in the US for about £260, in the UK price is expected to be £400+ when available in June?

Based on the above it would cost £348 to bring to the UK legally. You've then got warranty support issues etc. I'd pay the £400 for a UK model with UK warranty, support and the knowledge that it's engineered for the market.

I intend to replace the front Suspension Strut mounting and bearing. In order to remove the strut, I need a 7mm allen key and 21mm spanner to remove the stop plate

once the strut is removed from the car, what tools do I need to remove the suspension strut mounting apart from the spring compressor and allen key? According to Haynes I need "deep socket with hex flats on it" to remove the shock absorber top nut, but no size is given. I am assuming this nut size is also 21 mm.

I have been to a motor factor who sell a tool with lugs on it which locate in this nut but apparently this should also be used for the top nut but there are no locations for the lugs. Read more

The top nut does'nt hold the spring tension, there's a second castleated nut that holds the complete assembly together. Undo the top nut, unclip the brake hose, undo the two strut to hub bolts and remove from the car before compressing the spring and undoing the castleated nut.

Wifeys car was reversed into in her works carpark (side impact). Caused a melon sized dent. When she goes to move the car, she cant get it out of park - cue much drama. Anyway, by applying a bit of force to it, she was able to get it going. Am i right in thinking that the bump simply caused it to stick a bit, or could there be some more damage? It will obviously be going off to be repaired for the body damage, just wondering if i should get them to examine the gearbox.

Saw the damage last night - looks like it took a hefty thump. A works lorry/van was moving and the driver reversed into it, looks like it hit it with a nice solid corner! Hit it on on the door, just behind the door handle. The metal has buckled and the rear door will no longer open. Im thinking it moved the car backwards a little bit. Not familiar with the workings of park on an auto, but figure the movement caused the mechanisms to move slightly more than they wanted to and compress on the selector, making it a bit harder to move it. Assuming everything is ok (she drove home, then went out and came back, then went out again today and hasnt mentioned any more problems) i think it is sorted.

Just to clarify, the handbrake was probably on and she couldnt move the selector itself - until she gave it a good tug.

However, i will make sure that it is logged on the insurance claim, to cover us if it does go wrong.

I think it must be somewhat down to tracking. I'm on 17" Pentas and OEM tyres (haven't checked what they are, maybe they've changed them because of this) - it does tramline, but not much.

A colleague of mine has a Citroen Picasso which has air conditioning.
The windows steam up if the aircon isn't switched on. Do the models WITHOUT aircon have a steaming up problem?

Thanks

AC will get rid of any condensation more quickly than without. It's the most effective method of clearing a misted up windscreen. If it's very cold or very hot outside then using the AC with recirculation switched on can clear misting up letting the car use air that is roughly the same temperature and humidity as the car itself. Make sure you switch it back or the problem will come recur the other way.

I've a peugeot 306 xsi year 2000. For then 2nd time in 4 months i can't deactivate the immobiliser due to a blown fuse(The central locking and display panel don't work either) The last time i got the RAC to take me to the garage who sussed out it was a fuse. He said it took them ages to find it because it was located somewhere under the engine!! and not in the normal fuse box under the steering column or the one next to the battery. Does anyone know where this may be? The alarm as been playing up so i suspect his may be blowing the fuse.

Any help appreciated. Thanks
