Off to the pistes on Fri (Chatel) any recommendations car hire wise? Read more
I'm trying to find out about the specifications for this engine, particularly the later versions, 1995 or so (Mods, if you think this is more appropriate for Technical, feel free to move). It seems to be one of the most highly regarded diesel engines in terms of durability and refinement, without having been saddled with complex and costly-to-fix electronic management systems. I've checked the CBCB and done both a forum and site search here using "300D power", "300D bhp" and just "300D" without finding the information I want. Google has helped a bit, but got overwhelmed by the number of hits without a specific answer!
So please, can anyone tell me specifically about:
- power and torque ratings ... was it always 143 bhp?
- average quoted consumption figures
- any changes in the above in a particular year during this engine's life cycle
- when the engine finally ceased production / was replaced (guessing 1997)
Finally, if anyone's feeling really generous with their time, same questions about a different engine - Merc 250 TD, same era.
In case you're wondering why, I'm researching the viability of using this engine for a project - a big three seater motortrike to run on biodiesel! Hence my preference for an engine that's not overly complicated. Any comments and recommendations are also welcome.

i purchased a 2002 mondeo 1.8 lx 6 weeks ago. everything was great to start with but now i've got an annoying rattle coming from the dashboard, it seems to happen when the car gets warm . i know its something thats lose because it only happens when going over bumps and seems to be coming from the vent just under the windscreen. i also have a clicking noise coming from the area just under the tax disc, i thought this was a lose bit of trim but i've managed to stick this bit of trim back in place but it's still happening. has anyone else experienced this with a mondeo and can anyone help before i rip the dashboard out.

Had the same problem with a new style FOCUS. At speed only. Found it to be the plastic battery cover rattled when the wind got under it at over 60mhp. Bit of sealant solved it.

Just been browsing Telegraph Motoring section and in HJ's Choose a Car section ( tinyurl.com/na5t9 ) he quotes the following prices
02/52-reg Citroën Picasso HDi 90 SX
Price: about £8,000
03/53-reg Citroën Berlingo Multispace HDi
Price: about £8,000
02/52-reg Fiat Multipla JTD 115 ELX
Price: about £8,000
these seem extremely high to me, especially since I have been looking at trade in prices/selling prices for my similar Berlingo (with a/c). I reckon I'd be lucky to get more than £4500 trade in or £5500 private sale. Am I right or should I advertise my 03 Berlingo HDi for £7000????

What\'s for you won\'t pass you by
not sure if this should be in technical but here goes, I've a saab 9-5 which i am very happy with except for one niggling fault which is starting to drive me insane. there is a whistling coming out of the air vents that is only cured by turning off the fans. as ususal with these thing the car is just out of warranty (62k) before i take it down to the dealers and pay a fortune for them to dismantle the dash and tell me they can't find anything, are there any ideas amongst the back room gurus.
Regards

I don't know the setup on the 9-5, but can the vents be manually opened/closed (ie with wheels on the vent itself)?
My MB will whistle if the auto climate control tries to force air through the vents that I've shut manually, and our Jazz does it (very faintly) if air is directed to the screen only.
Just bought one of these(code SX027) for Pugs & Citroen, at what I think is a good price (unless you of course know different). So if anyone needs anything this site has half price deals on them and lots of other stuff. I am not connected with this site in any way but the ball joint tool seems to be good quality.

I bought a lovely two piece chrome battery post and terminal cleaner many years ago. It gets used about once a year, but the action of cleaning the battery posts with a few quick twists always gives me the quiet satisfaction of having just the perfect tool for the job. Perhaps that's what it is about men and tools?
Automatic bolts that are controlled remotely by wireless:

The possibilities are considerable. No more trying to get at that bolt that you have to be double jointed to access. Invisible fastenings that have no outside traces but open themselves from inside.
On the other hand manufacturers could use them to continue the trend of making it impossible to get your vehicle serviced by independents or to do it yourself. Then what happens if a disgruntled employee leaves taking one of the unfasten controls. He could walk through a parking garage and unfasten parts on all vehicles of that make without even touching them! Read more
Were they thinking about Doctor Who's sonic screwdriver ?
Hi, did a search couldnt find anything about this.
Im trying to get my 1.4 '97 306 through its MOT but its failing on the emmissions.
For the MOT ive just changed the Lambda sensor and Cat and its recently had a new coil pack, air filter and plugs and leads.
The exhaust doesnt seem to have any leaks and my mechanic has cleaned off all the sensors.
During the test it needs to be revved a bit to get the co2 level down but after it does fine on the fast idle test. As soon as you take the foot off the accelerator for the idle test the co2 shoots up and it fails.
When im driving it, also, if i slow down for a corner and change down a gear it sometimes backfires.
The plugs get pretty sooty too!
Youll be my hero if you can help me out!

Thanks mate I will look into it and get back to you.
If anyone else has any other suggestions keep em coming!

I used Holiday Autos - w w w.holidayautos.co.uk - when we flew to Geneva to visit Switzerland last Feb. They offer various prices (and their additional insurance costs seemed to be more comprehensive and cheaper than others). Once you have booked, they tell you who the Rental company will be - it turned out to be Alamo last time. At the airport I was given a choice of something 'flash' but pokey (BMW 1 series or Giulietta, I think) or a Meriva. Had to take the latter as space was an issue - turned out to be top spec model.
No problems with rental or car - snow tyres coped with the -18deg.
(I have no connection to company).
(When I took my son to the 2005 Geneva Motorshow, we flew via Basle/Mulhouse. Wasn't aware of HA then so booked direct with what seemed to be the best deal with a major company. Booked on the French side, as it was a fair bit cheaper, and was given a new Modus. As it was French, there was no Swiss motoorway vignette, so I had to get that at the border, thus reducing somewhat the saving I had made...)
