Given that oil suitable for VW PD engines is higher spec than your run-of-the-mill fully-synthetic diesel oil, is there any advantage for, say, owners of common-rail engines in using it? (It just so happens Halfords have it on special offer at the moment... and I have a service coming up for my Peugeot 306 HDi.) Read more
Yes.
Provided the viscocity suit your car, the VaG PD suitable oils are of a very high spec regarding anti-shear properties.
Hi all,
My GF's 318 Ci (E46, 2000 V, 70k, climate, CD autochanger, cloth, very good nick, metallic steel blue) remains unsold, coming up for the 6th week in autotrader. Went from £9k (vastly overpriced, I know!) to £8k, now down to £7650 in the mag (further down to £7450 on the website). We haven't even had any phone calls (or even Nigerian scammers) for a couple of weeks. Do punters get put off seeing the same car in several weeks running at decreasing cost? Is it still overpriced? I'm now thinking of ebay, but the prices on there seem to be pretty low (scraping £6k, where there is interest). At a bit of a loss! Have these cars suddenly dropped in value/ interest? I know it's a bit underpowered, but at least isn't too expensive to insure. Starting to be a bit of a thing, as she has her new car already!
Any advice very much appreciated!
Cheers,
Alex.

Bought a golf mark 3 VR6 last night, with full VWSH and 91k in 11 years. It's in good nick & cost £1700. Unfortunatly on first cold start this morning it started OK for a second and got up to idle then died, requiring a second start. Noticed that that the main temperature gauge on the dash only works intermittently. Any ideas? Read more
Simplest and cheapest things first:
* Have you given it a good Italian tune-up, getting the engine fully warmed up and pushing it to high revs in as many gears as are legal (that's 3rd, 4th and 5th out of the game then)?
* Then comes my familiar refrain: try the VAG injector cleaner just in case it helps. It will only do good and if it makes no difference then at least you'll know the fuel injectors are clean (part no. G 001 700 03).
* Then perhaps you ought to get the electrics looked at if the gauges are unreliable, but if the problem has gone away you can postpone any expense if you prefer.
Others more expert than I am may well have better suggestions.
I haven't experienced this problem with my December 1996 VR6 Highline.
Checking car for MOT, switch on side lights and OSF is not working. Turn on ignition and light comes on, so the bulb is OK. Any ideas where to look, earthing fault etc? Read more
have you checked the bulb?
it may have dim/dip on this year and the light is your headlight bulb

\"a little man in a big world/\"
I've had to replace the ABS ECU on my Golf III VR6 and bought it (used) complete with the pump. Yesterday I removed the old one and fitted the new one in it's place. I used a pressurised bleed kit and pushed all the air out of the system, but still there the brakes are not fully working as I can feel air in the line somewhere. I re-bled them today and got no more air out.
The brakes work, just, but when pumped are good, telling me there is air in the system. I have been told that it is likely that air is still in the pump, as it would have been empty when I fitted it, although this seems strange as I used the pressurised bleeder. Is there a way I can get the air out of the pump without having to remove it as this is not an easy task on the VR6 due to the size of the engine?
Thanks
Gaz

I thought that it was recommended to fill the pump before fitting it. presume it gets a bit messy but you can get a situation where there is so much air in the pump that nothing happens. Also some abs systems cannot be easily bled - even with a pressure system, the technique is to use the diagnostics equipment to activate the pump and the valves so that fluid can get round.
If you dont want to refit it i would start with redoing the flush. and repeat several times over the next few days.
Whilst giving SWMBO's 306 its annual service and pre-MOT check last weekend prior to the actual MOT this week, I was visited by three ducks. Quite happy to waddle up to me and be fed and watered, they even kept me company under the car whilst it was up on axle stands! Eventually, they waddled off to sit in a puddle in the middle of the road until sunset some hours later, nonchalantly watching the cars drive slowly past.
"Ahh", says you, but what's interesting is that three ducks (always three of which two are always Mallards) have done the same thing on exactly the same weekend for each of the five springs we have lived at our current address. I know this because of the MOT date. They then fly in each morning for the rest of the week, waddle around the local houses as a group, paddle on our pond looking nervous when the enormous koi come up for a mosey, and then clear off for another year!
Leaving aside all the obvious puns, jokes, and "holiday" a n a l ogies (spacing in case of swear filter), I was most surprised at not just the regular timing of their "migration" (doubtless from Aylesbury's Watermead lake) but the regular destination, too.

Many thanks for the tips.
I'm about to sell my Peugeot 306 privately. It's got 6 weeks MOT left to run and I was thinking about putting it through for a new MOT before I sell it as I'm sure this will add to the value.
How much is is likely to add?
The car is a 1994 M plate 1.4xl with 132k on the clock.

I'd say best bet is whack it on ebay with lots of photo's and a good description. Then let market forces do they're stuff.
I have a 2004 honda civic 1.6se with about 21k. Overall i am happy with the car apart from an occasional very notchy gear change between 1st and 2nd when it feels like it is about to jump out of 1st. It seems to happen more when i am accelerating harder and when cold or warm possibly more when warm. My local honda dealer recently changed the gearbox mechanism or link (i think) under warranty which cured another problem where the gearstick would vibrate in 3rd gear. This improved the overall gear change between any gear which now feels more precise but this did not sort the 1st to 2nd problem. Any suggestions would be welcome. Read more
Depends who you speak to in the dealership, the service managers will often say your problem is unique. But at my local honda dealer, when a mechanic is sent out to test drive the car with you, he will often give you the low down. The "younger" mechanic who looks like he has a copy of max power in his overalls will usually be more open than the one who has his eye on the service manager's job. To be fair to Honda, they are usually very good with warranty stuff in my experience..
Honda Prelude was fitted with new Bosch blades. One is 18",t'other is 19". Trouble is the top of the blade whacks the edge of the windscreen on the up stroke drivers side. I've tried adjusting the position of the blade on the spindle but to no avail. It either taps against the other blade on the completed down stroke(if you lower it slightly) or if you try to adjust it again your'e back to how it was. I asked the chap at the shop to put the shorter one on the drivers side but I'm not sure if this is correct or has solved the problem. It's no big deal but it would be less tiring on the senses to have a quieter time when its raining. Any advice appreciated. Perhaps I should have bought the Honda originals. Although the Bosch ones are excellent I'm sick of patterned parts! Cheers, Mike. Read more
Cheers L'escargot I may just get the main dealer tp send me a couple of blades.

Nice cheap fix then :-)
