Sat-nav drivers land in deep water again
By Richard Savill, Daily Telegraph (Filed: 20/04/2006)

Motorists were furious at being stranded in up to 4ft of water yesterday after satellite navigation systems sent many away from a road closure and into a river.

Cars, vans and motorbikes have come to grief because the systems send them across a ford on the Avon, in Wiltshire.

The problem - near the village of Luckington - has occurred because a main road a mile away is closed, following the collapse of a wall, and drivers are warned to "seek alternative routes".

Most satellite systems send traffic into the village and across the ford, known locally as The Splash, in the hamlet of Brook End.

Locals are reported to have been charging as much as £25 to pull motorists out.

Lesley Bennett, 59, a parish councillor who lives next to the ford with her husband Dudley, 63, said a "ridiculously" high number of drivers had been marooned.

"Before the road closure there was one a week but now we're getting one or two a day," said Mrs Bennett, a photographer.

"When the driver's car conks out he looks stunned and when you ask him what happened he says: 'My sat-nav told me it was this way'. There are signs warning about the water but the fools just plough on regardless."

The river, which is close to the source of the Avon and home to trout, ducks and coots, usually flows at about 2 ft deep but can reach 4 ft after heavy rainfall.

"We do what we can to help," said Mrs Bennett. "I offer to dry people's clothes while they wait for help to be towed out."

A depth sign warns drivers of the danger but villagers have complained that it was put in the wrong place. Mrs Bennett said: "The sign has been put where the water is shallowest. It's ludicrous because it means you have to drive through deeper water to get through."

Kevin Assinder, 39, a printing company director from Chippenham, Wilts, was directed over the ford yesterday by the satellite system in his Land Rover Discovery.

He said: "I did wonder about going through but my car had no problems. If I was in a smaller car, I think I'd still be sitting there."

Satellite navigation systems have been blamed for sending motorists on other tricky routes.

This month drivers were sent to the edge of a 100 ft drop on an unclassified road at a place called Crackpot, North Yorkshire. In March, a lorry driver became stuck on a narrow stone bridge off the A383 near Newton Abbot, Devon.

Tomtom, a satellite navigation supplier, said it tried to ensure its information was as up-to-date as possible.

A spokesman said: "Safety is an absolute priority for Tomtom and as such we encourage our customers to report any problems they may have encountered which we report directly to our providers.

"If a driver ever feels they are being directed down an inappropriate road then a Tomtom device can quickly re-route them."

I did not get a good response when I informed TomTom that there voice directions were wrong at three locations in a few miles.

Obviously looking to increase their client base and having seen their ad just called for quote. Original quote was £120 more than my renewal, now beat my renewal by £25 and I will get a cheque for £50 if I take the policy - so £75 saved. No one else is cheaper for me at the moment. Read more

Well two weeks and two calls later and no written confirmation of the quote, so I've sacked them. If they can't do things right at this stage what chance should I ever need to make a claim? Frizzell for another year for me.

I'm thinking of buying a 2005 Grand Espace 2.2 DCI. Has anyone any good or bad feedback on these ? or any real alternatives ??

I should add that the Espace did 125,000 miles with us from new. Rather fun to see 123456 come up on the odometer.

Is anyone aware of any inherent problems with the braking system on this model Read more

As per the subject, really. My 18mth old Almera's suddenly started to flash the brake fluid / handbrake on light when I'm going around corners. Doesn't seem to matter whether it's left or right turns.

I've checked the brake fluid level - there's plenty in there (the car was serviced no more than 2mths ago so I would hope that there would be), so I've discounted low fluid levels.

The only two things I can narrow it down to are:
1) sensor on brake fluid moved, so that when the car is tilted as corners are taken, the fluid moves away and activates the sensor.
2) handbrake seems to have a bit of play in when down, although when taking a corner I gripped the handbrake to see if I could move it to stop the light - and it didn't seem to work.

I've tried a emergency stop to see if that illuminated it - nothing whatsoever.

Any thoughts?? The problem I have now is that I don't want to use my local dealer (two rather bad experiences with them trying to rip me off has put paid to my business with them), and the next one's 45mins away in another town..

Thanks in advance. Read more

Hi,
There are no wear sensors on the front or rear pad of the Almera.
I've just replaced the rear discs and pads on mine (00/W) at 54K, the pads were shot and the disc tapered where they were not sitting parallel to the disc. Your car seems too young for this though. Note the discs will be stuck on, and there are two M10x1.25 PITCH threaded holes (standard bolt pitch is 1.5mm) in the disc that allow easy removal. Sadly the front discs dont have them as well.
Can't help with the handbrake though.

Over the years the A3 has been improved with dualing, bypasses
built etc.
If the Devils Punchbowl section 2008 is ignored, it is at
least two lanes each way from Roehampton to the end of
the A3(M) where it meets the A27 and no traffic lights
BUT one roundabout spoils it.
A flyover would have made all the difference especially from the
safety angle.

Yes, but all the other improvements show just how cack-handed the approach to the Hindhead problem is. I.e. still no start date for the tunnel!

Sorry guys new user here and I know that the subject of MAF sensors has been covered. My problem is that I want to change mine, I have the new bosch sensor. This is going to sound really stupid but I am stumped by the screws!! It is only 2 screws and they have strange (to me anyway) heads on them. They seem star shaped, now I wouldn't have a problem getting them out but some bright spark has put a small metal column in the centre of the screw head which stops me getting a grip on it. I am obviously no engineering genius but does this require a special tool to deal with?, is it a conspiracy to make me pay extortionate labour charges? ie: is it an audi specific tool?
Hopefully I have described the problem and someone can point me to the right shelf in halfords. many thanks and sorry for being a complete numpty. Read more

The 6.3 km bypass officially opened on Thursday (16 March 2006) - eight months early!

Some works will continue, particularly improvements to the interchange at Junction 9 of the A1(M).

I use this road when transiting from M25 West, A1(M) then on the A505 to Cambridge.

A very impressive bit of road.- tunnel construction pics.

"Complete the A120 dual from the A10 at Puckeridge to Stortford. Also Braintree to Colchester.

Dual the A130 Dunmow to Chelmsford."

They're in the early stages of planning for the dualling of the A120 to Colchester. There will be a new stretch of road from the A120 just outside Braintree to the A12 just south of Marks Tey, with no junctions in between. It's probably about 10 years away yet though.

As for the A130 Dunmow to Chelmsford, it's maybe worth continuing on the A120 to Braintree and taking the A131 from there as that's dual carriageway pretty much all the way to just outside Chelmsford where it meets the A130. Plus you get to see them building the new horse racing track.

Ruperts Trooper

I need a new set of dampers on my Mk4 Astra. I've used Monroe Sensatrac on a couple of previous cars and been very pleased.

The Sensatrac may have been replaced by the Reflex but their US website indicates that Reflex are intended for SUV's / light trucks and doesn't have the Position Sensitive Damping (PSD) of the Sensatrac.

Is the Reflex a real replacement for the Sensatrac or just an improvement on their basic gas damper?

Web searches for Monroe suppliers draws blanks (excluding North America!). Are Monroe dampers still available for European models, if so where from? Read more

Ruperts Trooper

Thanks for your input. I eventually traced a European website for Tenneco, its www.taeu.com

Apparently the Reflex is an update of their "Original" while the Sensa-trac has been updated to "Sensa-trac Safe Tech" but European applications are limited.

Only the Reflex are available for the Mk4 Astra, which would be too basic for me, so I seem to have a choice of top/side adjustables from Spax or Gaz.

Does anyone have any experience of the Gaz brand?
